Inter iBurst traffic - is it immune to capping and shaping?

LoneGunman: Look, I am already in a bad mood today because of being ****ed over by my company.

I DON'T WORK FOR WBS. I AM JUST HAPPY THAT WBS IS GIVING ME SOMETHING BETTER THAN 56K DIALUP IN AN AREA WHERE THERE IS NO TELKOM LINE (AND THERE WON'T BE TELKOM LINES FOR THE NEXT 6 MILLION YEARS) THE PRODUCT WORKS AND I AM HAPPY MOST OF THE TIME!! I GET DECENT SPEEDS BECAUSE I TOOK THE TIME TO TWEAK AND PLAY WITH MY MODEM LOCATION AND PC SETTINGS. I AM AN ENGINEER SO I PLAY WITH THINGS ALL THE TIME YOU KNOW! I AM NOT A STUDENT LIKE SOME PERSON AROUND HERE WHO THINKS HE IS THE CAT'S WHISKERS BECAUSE HE IS IN VARSITY AND DADDY IS PAYING FOR HIS IBURST!

ow my ears :P For what its worth, I wasnt thinking about you at all (when referring to some of the lab rats who like the experiment/keep telling other labrats to stay in the cage.)
Seriously. Big diff between folks who are simply having a good Ibust experience, and talking about it - and 'those others' who really consistently persist in attacking folks who aren't :)

LG you so right i dont blv that anyone is truly happy with iburst i have e mailed them 5 times and not even 1 reply yet. this is a bloody disgrace. i cannot blv people here defend them (not talking about Kei) and thats why i blv that some people here are involved with the company.

I am not attacking anyone. I have offered help to iBurst users ON THREE OCCASIONS to people with their problems because I can't understand why mine works well and their's don't but I can see there's a "core group" on the go here as well so, so much for me trying to be of help and being almost labelled a "WBS Supporter" / "WBS employee" / "WBS fan"

for the record I do have issues with WBS atm, regarding the fact that their accounts dept IQ is about -70 and their systems are a crock of ****. Otherwise thankfully I haven't had a need to phone helpdesk.

And, as for the Friday nite outages, I guess they're doing it then to minimally impact the majority, who, like me, go out on a Friday night to get time-out from technology. And I have never experienced **** speeds afterwards. In fact, the only problems I've had were disconnects and slow speeds on p2p but I can recover from these problems like I usually do.

Kei buddy i am with you mate , you have been very helpfull to me in the past and i appreciate it. Not directing at you at all. We have never had a disagreement to my knowledge.
But there are some people here who attack forumites quite vigorously when they say something bad about iburst and it makes me and Lg wonder who they "work" for if you know what i mean.

Yeah but there are people on this forum who work for WBS. A few people who post minimally! Some appear to be resellers (Tradepage et, al.)

I'm truly happy with Iburst. I'm truly unhappy with WBS. But WBS is not a problem for me because my Iburst works so well. I have phoned/emailed them a total of 4 times in as many months, and all issues have been resolved promptly.

I'm involved with WBS... only because they operate Iburst, and I have to pay them my monthly subs. RPM can vouch that I have no connection with WBS because he delivered the mp3 player that I won last month to my work address! :D

You have to understand that Iburst can and does work well, and that many users are happy. Just as those who are happy have to understand that many users have significant problems and are faced with a shocking lack of communication, troubleshooting and service from WBS.

I don't see anyone uniformly defending WBS on these forums. They have a long road to travel to rebuild the trust that they destroyed over the past couple of months. Fact is, I don't expect much from them, so when they do surprise, it is usually to the upside.

ok i see your point but how do you explain speeds:

2005-05-17 05:40:07 EST: 22 / 91
Your download speed : 22 kbps.
A 2.8 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed is much faster than down.. have you tweaked?
Your upload speed : 91 kbps.

This is a disgrace no matter how you look at it and they dont even hve the decency to reply to my complaints.

In the end if they continue like this they will close down

I have learnt that patience is a virtue. I remember the days when it took me a whole day to download a 5 meg PDF file because international bandwidth was (and stil is) at a premium in SA. Like I keep saying, WBS has it's faults and I agree with everyone that certain aspects of them are uncool and they must be blasted for that but i am also willing to help people who struggle so that, if I get into the same pickle I can also help myself instead of coming here to moan.

another thing guys we are paying for a service and we should be getting what we paid for. I am not paying R699 for dial up speeds - thats not what i signed up for and they have to resolve it. The problem in this country is that we just keep paying for **** service and products - we accept anything that is given to us.

I can't explain them, because I don't experience them. There are many things that can go wrong:

1) Your configuration/hardware
2) Your link to/from your nearest BS.
3) Your BS's configuration
4) Your BS's link to/from the WBS Network.
5) The WBS traffic control/shaping
6) The WBS network link to the WWW

Since I and others do not experience such slow speeds, your problem lies in 1-4. If there are people on your BS who are not experiencing such slow speeds, your problem lies in 1-2.

Why not put the details of your configuration, basestation etc in your signature. That way if other people are having similar problems, they can home in on potential causes.

will do mate - i am in jhb cntral at the moment and have never had such speeds before here and i test once a week something on WBS's side definitely but will put that in my sig.

Then don't accept it. Cancel it. Get something else.

What I find surprising is that there is no "iBurst Technical" topic here like there is with the MyWireless section. It would be nice to have a section like that and inside that, be able to post mods, FAQ's and other workarounds.

craigsa: could you please let me know what your configuration is so I can think about where your problem lies.I am beginning to think your UTD is going faulty maybe

Is it confirmed by other speed tests? There might be a problem on the testing site. I get wildly different answers on all all those broadbandreport sites. That one with only 3 slots doesn't even work when I try it. I can get <100kbps on one and >400kbps on another just a few minutes apart.

What are you getting on the Telkom test?

Kei thanks mate i will post as follows:

Location : JHB Central
Windows xp service pack 2
signal 100%
mtu = 1352
rwin 17136
dont know what else to put it??
if i ping www.iburst.co.za = 80-300 response

Thanks Kei and i agree we should have a tech. section

Telkom says 400kbps but every other site says 90 up and 50 down - who do you blv?

Guys i just want to thank you for your help - more response than i ever got from the helpdesk. This is what the forums should be about

craigsa: try setting your MTU to 1400 as an experiment and let me know how it is after that. If no improvement then revert back to your old MTU. Try downloading this and report the speed to me. This file gives me 34~56kbyte/sec download
