Interested in DSTV - whats your advice?

HI guys and gals

I'm interested to get me DSTV in the next month and seeing that some of you allready have DSTV i would like to know what are the do's and dont's. I would need Dual View otherwise it would mean the end of my marriage :D

Any specific option(s) i should go for and what did you pay for your purchase of the dish, decoder, installation and the monthly payment is R550 i believe.

Saw this http://www.dstv.com/dstvsa/content/en/sa/about_xtraView and was looking at option HD PVR + 1110 as i would like the option to record or is this much more expensive?

I would appreciate all the input...the negatives and positives you had experienced

I believe their is a "Rent to Own" option from Teljoy. While this might not be the cheapest option it could certainly prove to be the most convenient. I believe the standard package which includes the std. decoder, dish and installation costs R99pm over a period of 5 or 3 years. What I like about this is that should at any time a fault occur(during this period ) with the equipment, Teljoy will come out and fix it free of charge. I'm sure they will have various other packages available with regard to PVR/HD

Personally in my opinion I don't think DSTV is worth the money...

Yes, i agree they are expensive but then again, what do you watch if you dont have DSTV - absolutely ZILTCH. I'm a cricket and rugby lover and no live games are broadcasted on the SABC channels, etc

I would rather take the money and buy more cap and download what I want to watch. DSTV is an expensive waste of money. You will be disappointed after a month or two.
 
Dstv is not too bad. Yeah there are tons of repeats, and yes, they dont show the tv shows at the same time as the US, but if you enjoy watching tv shows get it. If you love sport, then i dont know how you be coping without dstv up till now.
 
So easy to say leave DSTV. If you dont take DSTV...you stuck with SABC and E. Thats it. Unfort DSTv is a rip off with price, but if you like series, sport and movies etc...there is no choice. Will just have to cough up...

Ja, it's true. If you want it for the sport then you are stuck paying R500 a month to a monopoly company.

For any other reason it is just not worth it.

Thats prob the only and biggest reason why i consider getting it. Tri-Nations, Pro 20's , IPL, Tests (rugby and cricket), geez where am i gonna see this if i dont have DSTV?

The good option to go for because you then get free installation ...... except, despite still advertising it, they have no stock ... it's only expected 'End of April' (I've been waiting since end February :mad:)

True, on the one hand i LOVE sport and one the other R500 - R600 is a lot of money hey?
 
After around 10 months you get a feeling of deja vu. The repeats kick in.

More recently, they've been showing movies and the (old/worn) tape jumps for 20 minutes before it gets noticed.

Dude don't listen to the anti dstv bunch :). If you can afford it get the best decoder, dstv is very nice specially if your a sports fan, you cannot download live cricket and rugby the whole month for 500 bucks.The wife will have tons to watch, kids will be kept busy if you have and you can sit back and watch just about every major sporting event known to man for 550 bucks a month :p

Personally i think 600 bucks a month for dstv is a great way to spend money, you spend less going out, you get to see alot of good programs and movies and best of all the sport is just amazing. Sure if your going to sit in front of dstv 8-10 hours a day you will struggle to find something to watch obviously. Think about 600 bucks, most people blow this on cigi's in month and that kills you :p, some blow it on alcohol in one weekend, other go out to dinner with the family and that sets them back 400 bucks. If you think about it, it is well worth the money and lasts an entire month as opposed to one weekend drinking, or a couple meals a month.

Yeah...if its only for sport...well, ja...have to agree...bit excessive. Im not much of a sport fan, will watch rugby games now and then, WRC etc if I stumble across it. Watch quite a few of the channels...and the repeats aint that bad...cos I miss a lot of some shows..so try catch up on weekends.

Need to get that damn PVR...but all those bugs...sheesh...I dunno... :confused:

LOL, good to see that Killa has already chimed in with his love for DSTV, to contradict all these nay-sayers.

It is worth it just for the sport and nothing else. It is too expensive at R500 a month, but there is nothing else out there for us to choose.

I would not go for the Teljoy option. It means a 3 year contract which will have you paying almost triple the value of the thing in that time. Not cool.
