Despite being the age of technology and what-not, playing a board game with a bunch of friends (not necessarily alcohol induced) is still quite amusing. We’ve done the Guitar Hero’s and the Buzz’s, but extra hardware always seems to be an issue.

So, does anyone have suggestions for nice board games for approx. 5 people? I know there are some gems out there, but I can’t afford to go buy each one and try them out. :)

Preferably something that isn’t too technical (e.g. Dungeons & Dragons) or too slow paced (e.g. Monopoly). I’ll allow suggestions like 30 Seconds, Pictionary, etc. but only if they are sufficiently different and actually interesting.

A recently discovered game (brought from Poland, thanks Paul), that is great fun:
Carcassonne [we have the Hunters and Gatherers edition]

(hopefully this thread gets at least one or two replies… :o )

So any interesting ideas, but none of these *insert long list of games*?

Lol.

I would have said d&d. Its very technical to begin with, and a LOT of extra hardware is required though.

I DM a cell running 3.5, so pm me your area if your keen to try it (assuming I live anywhere near you :) )

Otherwise, the Battlestar Galactica board game is awesome. I'd recommend reading up on that.

Have a look at Settlers of Catan, the game takes 1-2 hours and is great fun. The game is designed in such a way that no two games are alike, and there are several expansions available for you to increase the number of players, or add extra dimensions to the game.

We play quite a few, although they tend to be a little more complicated than "30 seconds" or Pictionary:

Settlers of Cathan
Risk: Godstorm
Risk: 2210

If you'd consider card-games as well, try Munchkin or its variants too.

You dont make no friends playing Catan tho. Eish people can get p!ssed off.

Settlers of Catan...
There is someone in the group who has suggested this, but we've never gotten round to it. I'll move it up on the to do list.

Munchkin...
We've got Munchkin Bites + Expansion, Super Munchkin + Expansion and Munchkin Fu -- agreed, great fun. The wit in Bites makes it my favourite but Fu is good for shorter games.

We've tried this game before but for some reason it didn't work out too well. Enjoyment was utterly low... maybe we did it wrong. :D
Since allot of people are for it, I'll give it a go again.

I saw a boardgame in Outer Limits a while back -- but I can't remember its name... It had goblins building machines that you had to power with electricity networks and such. Anyone heard of / played something like this?

Risk Godstorm: But only play with 4 other people you are good friends with. Tempers can run high with all the chaos you can reign down in the game. So it's good to play with people who don't take things too personally and beyond the game. You can't win Godstorm by being nice. At least from my experience.

Munchkins: Check out http://www.worldofmunchkin.com to find out what it's all about. No amount of praise I give it will do it justice. Depending on the variation/expansion packs you get, the game can last from 1-6 hours. We've had the munchkin impossible card game for a while and it's a fun role playing card game, full of opportunities to use sneaky, backstabbing tactics against your opponents. I'd suggest getting the Munchkin quest board game though. Play time is probably longer than monopoly, but way more fun and rewarding. Requires a little bit more co-operation with your opponents in order to win the game.

But always remember, what happens in the game, should stays in the game :)

Consider dominion - its a strategic card game.
