I've been reading some threads and must say Im really enjoying this election, we dont know what could happen really... But we know what has happened, so I dont know if everyone knows about news24's special elecion page, but thought I share it... And point out some points I've noticed:

http://www.news24.com/News24/Elections/Home

In 1994 19 million people voted, 1999 and 2004 about 15 million, that is a decline of about 5 million voters in a country that has more people now... Im being optimistic and I think that we might hit 19 million again this year, this is one of the most interesting elections since 1994.

Now in 1994 the NP got 20% of the countries votes... ANC got 62% and IFP got 10%... In 1999 ANC increased to 66%, the NP wasnt around anymore and their votes basically got split between the NNP (7%) and DP (10%)

Now from that statistic, remember voters dropped by 4 million... You can gather that a lot of people didnt see the point in voting anymore... In 2004 the NNP had 2% votes, DP got 12% votes... Now this is interesting the amount of voters stayed the same, so basically it means that more white people stopped voting, because to be honest the DP and NNP is more white orientated parties? The ID also did good... With 2%, I would say that would be some old DP/NNP supporters.

Now with the DP and NNP both gone, the DA basically takes there place... So lets say that should be 15%... I also feel that the ID has a weaker campaign this time round so the DA should get some of their votes, AND the DA is doing really good in the Western Cape, so they have a good reputation...

Is it just me being very optimistic, or do you also feel that the DA might have a chance of getting 20% of the votes if you look at those figures?

I wont go on about COPE, ANC and IFP... Post is already to long, but look at the website it is quite interesting :) Also sorry about making this a bit racial, but after reading this thread:
http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=168420

Which I agree, with I thought I'd post this.

Thought I'd add another post to this one after I just read a comment in another thread...

I've been thinking about this, a lot of people still vote ANC because of what they did to end Apartheid 15 years ago... Now dont get me wrong but I'm also gratefull, but if you ask someone what they ANC has done for me, their answer is still end Apartheid (specially non-white people, obvisouly) But dont you think in 15 years you would want them to have done more than just empty promises?

To put it in simple terms, if someone doesnt perform in a sports team they get replaced, someone else gets a chance to try, you cant keep picking a player because he won you a world cup 15 years ago, if he isnt performing now, it's time to get a replacement...

Thats how I feel, its time to give someone else a chance at the spot, if they dont perform, you can always recall the ANC in 5 years, but they aren't in form, let them take a break, get sourted out and try again if the new party fails... 3 chances are enough, its time for change...

It doesnt matter who you vote for, aslong as you agree with what they stand for, just remember a manifesto is just a possible list of things that wont be done... Like the ANC has proven, vote COPE, ID, DA, IFP, UDM, ACDP, whatever... Just give someone else a chance to try and do a better job...

I know this is preaching to the wrong people, because this should be read by those people that cant afford internet or has never even seen a PC... Those people that still live in shacks, but thanks to the ruling party its just the people that cant be reached...

In 1994 voters did not have to register. Anyone with an ID could vote, including non-SA citizens. The large drop off in votes from 1994 to 1999 was due almost entirely to that fact. Only from 1999 did registration become mandatory.

Just a sidenote:

I would rather be broke living in a democratic country then have something while get fcked in the @ss.So yes,for a black person the ending of apartheid is a little bit more important.

Ah, so you want to move to Australia rather than watch the ANC "fck [this country] in the @ss."?

for a black person the ending of apartheid is a little bit more important.

That doesn't justify to carry on voting for an increasingly corrupt party. What they did 15 years ago isn't what they are doing now. Look at the damn news and the comments the ANC spur. There is no reason to vote for them anymore

I never said it didnt mean anything... Everyone is glad, obviously black people are more... But apartheid will never return in South Africa, it is gone, be gratefull for the ANC and EVERYONE that had a part in it, it wasnt JUST the ANC that ended apartheid? But look past that NOW, and see that South Africa has a NEW problem that isnt apartheid anymore and we maybe need someone new to change this problem, because it doesnt seem like the ANC is doing to good of a job.
