Intermittent Router DC's

Hi There

I am having some DC issues at the moment, which is becoming real bothersome.

They are quite random, sometimes I will get one or two a day, other times it may be 5-6 in an hour's time.

So far, here is what I have done to troubleshoot:
- I spoke to my local ISP guys, they say that they can't pick up on any problems with the account on their side, ie Not their problem.
- Next I phones our friendly guys @ Telkom, they said there is nothing wrong on Telkom's side either.
- So the next logical step, I assumed, would be the router. It is a TP Link ND W891ND.
- I did google or two, and the recommendations there suggested doing a frimware upgrade and a factory reset.
- Done both, unfortunately the problem still persists.

Now I want to know if there is anything else I can try, before declaring my router KIA and splashing on a new one?

Any help/ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Are your download and upload noise margins well above 6dB? Have you tried disabling uPnP in your router. This seems to have fixed a problem that I have been having with my router rebooting randomly when using a new machine running Windows 8.

Now that you mention it, the problem really escalated after I loaded Win 8 back on.
Will try and see if that helps.

Well, since disabling the uPnP, I haven't had a dc as of yet.
But will know for sure later this evening, that's when the dc's are quite pronounced.

*EDIT* Lol, barely a minute after I posted this.... my router dc'ed.

What are your down and up noise margins? There are many other things that you could try such as turning off any firewall, disabling any QoS features and any other non-essential router features. You could also try using different DNS servers such as Google (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4) etc. Disabling IPv6 support in router/Windows might also help - you may need to fiddle with the registry to do this properly so I would try the other options first.

I cant remember excatly, but I think the noise downstream was about 4 and upstream was 7.
I will give a couple of those suggestions a bash this evening and see if any of them makes a difference.

If your noise margins are near to or below 6dB then your line will start to become unstable. This is a limitation of the current ADSL technology. You could reduce your linespeed to improve the stabilily or remove the line filters and telephones (might see a slight increase in the noise margins). The other suggestions that I mentioned are to try to eliminate router freezes/resets due to unrecognisable packets etc. In this case the router will usually become unresponsive for a short while before rebooting itself. The noise margins should be well above 6dB in this case.
