International calls getting cheaper and cheaper

Still to expensive. So it's cheaper to call the US on MTN prepaid then another MTN phone locally.

How can you blame that cost anomaly on Interconnect rates?
 
Anyone done the sums?

Before I invest hours of my life, has anyone done the maths to compare how much it costs to make calls including the data charges?

Ive made a call with MTN prepaid to the UK and it cost me R1.80 during peak time. I was dumstrucked. But it will cost me R3.20 if I call another MTN number during peak time. WTF?
 
Much cheaper and easier options

Skype is way cheaper than any landline based VOIP service to probably all destinations, and it can be used with Fring on your cellphone.

Even better and cheaper is VOIPRAIDER. They offer 90 Free days of calls provided you top up initially with $10 credit. These free days of calls are to 'free destinations' include SA, USA, UK, AUS, NZ and all of the EU. I have been using it almost daily to call NZ for the last 3 months and hasn't cost a cent....

Even better is the fact that you can connect landline to landline for about 7c US = +- 50c. And if the 2 countries are 'free' destinations, e.g. SA and NZ then you don't pay for the call itself.

Once the free days are up... costs are about half that of skype.

And you can set it up as a SIP service on FRING on your cell phone as well. So no need for a computer. Only thing about this is that you need a 3G connection to get a decent call quality.

Will it be cheaper to call out, then redirect your call back to ZA for a local call? :D
 
On-network calls should be a few cents. We all know more people in our own country than we do overseas - so this is pointless for most of us. This is no bragging right, it only highlights the fact that local call charges are still too overpriced.
 
I just phoned MTN it will cost you R2.90 to call to Australia. This is shocking but the price is allmost double for local calls. I wonder how they caluclate that? I and I think it would be much cheaper to make a call out and be route it back into ZA if i look @ these prices. now Im going to make more calls to Australia cause I have friend and family their.

Another alternative that works very well (for me anyway) is jajah.com which is a bit like the old call-back services but web-driven. 9c US per minute from north america to an SA landline. about 29c US per minute to a mobile phone in SA. Also has convenient downloadable app for mobiles.
 
and Telkom smiles all the way to the bank.

We pay:
From UK to SA Cellphone 8p/min (R1.28/min at crazy current rate of R16/£1)
" to SA landline 2p/min (32c/min)

How on earth is this possible?
