Hi All,

So quick question as i have never needed to setup email for international reasons...

A client of mine is going over to Germany and Europe next month and wants me to setup his email so that he can send/receive whilst abroad.

His email is a "@telkomsa.net" email address. What should his smtp and pop addresses be so that he can send/receive overseas?

Also, what FREE email client would you recommend I use on his Notebook? Pegasus, Thunderbird... etc?

Appreciate the help!

Interesting that no-one has yet posted a response to this query, which affects many of us travelling overseas. While retrieving incoming POP mail has never been a problem for me overseas, replying to it or sending mail has always involved the cumbersome use of a webmail utility. No better solutions out there?

No contest on the OP's query about the best free email client: Thunderbird, by far.

Also suprised me when no one replied tbh!

Thanks for YOUR reply though! From what i understand, my client would need to keep his POP (Receiving) the same, but change his SMTP (Sending) to what ever ISP the hotel he stays at is using. Surely there must be an easier way, cos i know for a fact that this guy won't know how to go and change his SMTP settings no matter how many times i show him :erm:

Just a question about Thunderbird... I got bored of Outlook 07, and downloaded Thunderbird a few months back, and really struggled to manually setup my email account settings. Thunderbird was adamant that i must use an IMAP account... Any advice or knowledge you can pass along to me regarding this?

No, there's absolutely no compunction in Thunderbird to use IMAP. POP is a perfectly normal alternative if that's the way you want to go. If you do get stuck with either an automatic or manual setup for your email (and by now on Version 11 Thunderbird pretty much has all this backroom stuff properly sussed and sorted), then no sweat, just create a new account manually from Thunderbird (Tools | Account Settings | Account Actions) and then when you've got it up and running, just delete the original unwanted account.

Would still be interesting to know how others get around the outgoing mail problem when away from home!

Will get the latest version and try again. Thanks...

Is it possible to setup a POP account to be used as an IMAP? Perhaps this will counter the SMTP issue?

Setup a gmail account, and use the gmail authenticated smtp in his email client.

It will only use the gmail account as an smtp server, the incoming mail server will be the same as his works...

Ok, i see what you're getting at...

Please could you elaborate a little as to how one would go about this? If you are using the gmail smtp, wont your emails send as your gmail address instead of his company email? So for instance he sends me a mail, i am going to receive a mail from his [email protected] or will i receive mail from [email protected]? <-- Does that make sense?

From this link:

The solution is to go into your gmail Settings:Accounts and "Make default" an account other than your gmail account. This will cause gmail to re-write the From field with whatever the default account's email address is."

So basically you will need to also setup his work email as a POP account in the gmail interface.

To avoid any probability of issues when using GetMail For Googlemail we would recommend using the corresponding SMTP coordinator to the POP3 coordinator which preserves your concern i.e. the concern you are submitting from.

I have been using smtp2go.com, cost a few bucks but works well for me. (Windows and I Pad/phone)
keep pop the same and use smtp2go.com as smtp (have to register and pay first..)

go to smtp2go.com
