Does anyone know how international data roaming works? Is it the same as voice roaming? ie You activate roaming in general and don't have to specifically activate for data as well?

Country being visited is Italy.

Thanks

In my experience yes, also check which network in Italy is a Vodafone network, can't remember which it was now but its a lot cheaper than roaming on the others for data, its all on the website. ;)

Don't do data roaming unless you really have to, it can be VERY expensive.

Yep, rather get a pre-paid SIM card in Italy, and use a local network for data - roaming via Vodafone might be less expensive than say an MTN customer roaming in Italy, but an Italian pre-paid SIM card used for data in Italy should be even less expensive.

Roaming on Vodacom and its partner networks you can contain data costs to "just" R14/MB. Check the Vodacom website and specifically which partner networks. Otherwise I fully agree with the statement that a local (European) prepaid sim may be better. But again, do the homework; GPRS/Edge/3G/HSDPA is mostly expensive in Europe.

Data usage int he US

My MD will be travelling in the US with his Option data card.

What do you think the chances are he will be able to access the Vodafone/Verizon network with an SA/EU data card ?

I could be wrong, but does the USA not operate at a different frequency?

Roaming on GPRS/3G/Broadband

Good Day

We have just landed some work in Zambia. Are there roaming agreements between Vodacom SA and any mobile netwroks in Zambia for GPRS/3G data?
It would be pretty useful for staff to get email and pull the occasional important file off https enabled FTP site

Regards
Tjandies

Verizon is not GSM so if your boss is in the US he will most likely roam on either AT&T/Cingular or T-Mobile and the other snag is that the former uses a different frequency for 3G/HSDPA.

A colleague of mine was in the USA (Florida) and using a Vodacom SIM he could roam, but coverage was not good and speed was generally no better than Edge. Plus he ended up with a very high bill - so beware!

Depends on which carrier you select to be on when you get there with ur sim. You can either select Cingular or T-Mobile, so do a manual selection.

Id also go for buying a prepaid simcard. It does work out cheaper and their call centers are extremely helpful. Used Cingular without a lot of hassle.
