Hi All

This is what I want to do.
Rent an international server that has near unlimited bandwidth or quite a lot.
Download whatever I want to on that server. Then ftp the stuff back to my personal computer.

Who knows of the cheapest option/s?

PS: we talking about torrents mainly here. so dont think otherwise :)

I have no idea if your intentions are legal or illegal, so take note of this warning in case they aren't so legal. Most companies that offer servers have something in their TOS that disallows the server to be used to store any illegal data and some even prohibiting the download of torrents to the server.

Since server uptime etc isn't too much of an issue and security risks are fairly minimized because of your intended use, I would suggest going for a completely unmanaged solution. As for the unlimited transfer part, most servers that you can get overseas come with 500 - 1200gb+ for the cheapest options. So I really doubt you will need unmettered transfer as that costs an arm and a leg, even overseas ;)

You also didn't mention if you would prefer the server to have windows or linux loaded.

I think you'll be looking at something between R600-R1200/month, but that greatly depends on what you will be loading onto the server from the start, software packages etc. You might also be charged a set up fee. You could probably get away with getting a cheaper server because there is very little in terms of software that needs to be paid if you won't be hosting any websites on the server.

I would suggest you check out the offers here to get some really great deals: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=36

Tnx Bullfrog. Been looking around and what u have said is what I have come up with so far.

Well Syndre it goes like this:

Basically I like to d/l movies, games, music etc. Now with our wonderful Telecoms in SA you have to count every KB! I joined MyADSL when sentech starting buggering me around 4 years ago. Fast forward 4 years and a VERY BIG 4kOLL has happened to our industry.

I really dont mind having to pay about 300-700 for 30GB and up. But what Telkom did year before last November just screwed everyone. Anyways I am tired of waiting around for things to get better in this country. I still download a lot. And 1/3 of my bandwidth goes to uploading (aka torrents).

By setting up a server i'd be able to download directly via FTP etc. and let the server do the uploading. That way saving my very little precious Bandwidth I do have. And even one day if i download something thats 100GBs big i'll phone up the server provider, tell them to burn that on to dvd's and mail it to me. And that would be cheaper then buying GB's locally here.

I dont host anything locally here in SA anymore. Just to expensive. And if I could i'd setup a direct Satellite link to a european/us provider. yes it would be illegal but our local SAPS couldnt find a jumbo in a haystack. Only problem with that is I cant game and am reliant on Telkom.

Point is... Things will change in this country wrt to Telecoms... But my children will see it.. Not me or you! Well atleast not in this lifetime at the way things are going.

I am just improvising. And I am pretty sure that ppl here locally are doing this already. Makes sense for 5-10 ppl to share costs on something like this. Works out much cheaper and efficient in the long run.

moosag, not sure what you want to download but have you considered getting an easynews or similar account?

You could rent a Dedicated Server and use it for whatever you like.

That would make much more sense to me anyway. Zero uploads and full speed downloads over http.

I would rather use newsserver..

It would save u the money of having to rent a server intly..

Download the stuff, no uploads.. :) We even have a local server that gets most stuff, cuz it can be quite unreliable.. :P

Yeah, that and an uncapped IS account would probably set you back as much as the server would, and then you'd still have to have an account here to download off the international server.

Well all i'll say is Server + TorrentFlux + a little ingenuity = passive inc*me

*Twiddles his Thumbs*
