Internet access hamstrung by Telkom fees

Ok, Telkom is pitching to use the legal processes of appeal upon appeal upon appeal to screw all the money they can for as long as possible from consumers.

This has been bugging me for a while now.
Teklom ISP costs about 250 for 3GB currently.
Abolish the line rental, and Teklom ISP will have to go up to another figure.
So - worst case - the new price of teklom isp is 250 + 600 = 850, a month.
Now, resellers would have to also charge 850 a month, but they'd be levied 600 + (250 - 35 = ) 215 by teklom.
All we would have achieved is to clean up the Line Rental vs ISP charges confusion that teklom keep using to blunder the public eye.

Methinks that's a step in the right direction, and simplifies things a bit. Me just hopes that ICASA will ALSO action the other issues. Very very NB.
 
I had a chat with Antowan on IRC the other day, and I mentioned that Telkom has two options to try and protect itself.

1) Legal Process
2) Political Pressure

It seems I wasn’t so far off the mark, but then again what else can you do to protect your 700% inflated pricing structure. :mad:

Nice article. I knew about the rumors of an unfair hearing, but this is likely a ‘trick’ that Telkom uses to try to swing the final outcome in their direction. They had a few ‘spin doctors’ present, but I don’t think this scheme will work. In my presentation I explicitly stated that the rumors are false and that we feel that the hearings are ‘free and fair’. The story about the letter is another example of Telkom trying their luck: If they were so concerned, why not contact me first and ask me to remove it?

Interesting times :D

I have always known we get fleeced but It had not occured to me exactly how much. Telkom has been drumming us with 3GB into submission.

Now if Telkom is legally the sole provider of bandwidth in this country then surely they have the responsibility to give us the bandwidth at a fair price ? Wish i was at ICASA to make that pitch.
 
Hopefully this will push other publications to follow suit. An informed public woohoo!!
 
Is the hearings currently going on or what . Been no news today on telkoms closing...

That was my first thaught when I have seen their mail published here...another dirty trick by Telkom...

when I send a mail, I make sure about the destination BEFORE I hit the "sent" button!!!

Mean Monster - that's not the problem, teklom are saying that ICASA sending the "confidential" email to the original complainants is proof that the hearing is unfair.

A forumite or two posted the email on this forum -( where the complaints originated from )- , and now that according to teklom is proof of unfairness. Methinks teklom are grasping at straws.

Laughable really.

There are most probably 2 possibilities:

I did a tender for a "para-statal". In the name of "transparency" all enquiries one made was forwarded to all the others in the race. A real nuisance, because it alerted all on the "real issues". It could be an attempt of ICASA to be transparent.

Secondly, and most probably, it is a case of the accidental honest finger trouble sending the mail to the wrong address.

I don't see any dirty play from ICASA in it.

BTW: The "complainants" in this case could object against ICASA's one sided confidential communications with Telkom which can be constructed as ICASA acting in bad faith to the advantage of Telkom!
 
Come to think of it, if the hearings are public, but telkom wants to communicate with ICASA in private, then the hearings arent free and fair. So by sending out the email to the public, ICASA proved they are impartial and ready for a free and fair hearing, even with Telscum whispering sweet nothings in their ear....
