Internet access rockets in 2008

Nice... only problem is ... that figure should be more around the 10 million mark or higher. The Industry Thugs have kept this figure low because of their extortion of the market. :(

probably using different information gathering methods... or maybe Department of Communication statistics.

At that point, dial-up will effectively be dead as a connectivity option – it is more expensive, and utterly inappropriate to the changing nature of the Internet.

Amen to that! Hopefully this will happen soon...

erm maybe if telecommunications weren't so dam stupid and overpriced there would be more people......

Just illustrates how starved for internet the country is, and how vital internet connectivity is these days. South Africans are getting connected despite the crazy fees we have to pay and the poor levels of service.

The rest of the world is making it impossible to live without internet, it is just so sad that users in SA are forced to follow suit but at much higher costs and the dismal service levels here in SA.

It doesn't really feel like much have changed.....and allowing for "Africa time", I can't see how things are going to change that quickly...This might sound pessimistic I know, but when last did we see rapid change in SA? (Besides politics)

I still pay x amount for line hire..I still pay x amount for connection and I still pay x amount for bandwith...what has changed? Neotel I hear someone whisper....bah, there is no coverage where I live and even if there was it can't give me the speed that I need.

If we are gullible enough to think that these savings brought on by seacom is going to be passed on to us, the consumer, then we must not rant and rave when the opposite happens.

We live in a xxx country....where x is pay up...

Tweak, it's just you ... and the ITU. They seem to have thumb-sucked that 5.1-million number 4 years ago with no primary research to back it up, based on forecasts made about eight years ago.

numerous small, semi-legal networks have sprung up around the country in the past year. Many of these should emerge above the radar with their new licenses

I wonder if that includes Cap'n Wifi LOL!

:D

The evolution and changes in the telecommunications industry could not have come at a better time in South Africa, he says.

It couldn't? How about 10 years ago? 5 years ago? Anytime since internet access came to South Africa would've been a better time.

Yeah so true !

They couldn't have waited any longer than this. It would probably never have happened if it wasn't for the Fifa world cup coming here in the first place.
