Internet Changes Lives in SA

South Africans have been quick to see the fun to be had on forums with real time information sharing. These users fully understand what it means to be part of the Internet generation and have cultivated respected net identities.

This is good news for a number of interested parties but mostly for South Africans themselves. It is a strong indication that we are keeping abreast of global technological changes and openly embracing technology.

Well I'll like to think so, but with Telkom still a monopoly, the changes are painfully slow or non-existent where I'm sitting.

Ah, but what do those who are actually technologically advanced think of the average user? Owning a pc, iPod and a PS2 does not translate into knowledge (as a lot of people seem to think).

of course it does
granted majority of it is idiot proof, but the more exposure the general public have to technology in any form, the more they will have an understanding of its capabilities.
its a knock on effect... you will always have more advanced users, but its the average user that dictates the pace.

You must remember that to consider yourself technologically advanced doesn't mean you have to understand the underlying technology, just be comfortable using it.

The average person, no matter how intelligent, will often pat themselves on the back for managing to install a piece of software and grin and say "Aren't I good ?"

This is fact and computer geeks should not deride them for it.

That would be like a professional rock climber laughing at the first timer scrambling over their first obstacle, proclaiming "I did it ! - I'm a rock climber !"

Or a mechanic poking fun at a person who just figured out how to change a spark plug and is proud of themselves for doing so.
 
Are you trying to remove all the fun involved in being better than someone else at something?
 
if i was a rock climbing mechanic i'd laugh at the idiots who scramble over thier first obstacle to get to the car to install software that tells them to change the spark plug because they are newb scum and i am teh leet

The intenet has changed my life for the better. no more running to the library for info. Google for 10secs

actually, that was one time i fogot i had an assignment.
So i booted up my comp and surfed the net for it. It was osmosis!:eek:
The net also changes lives socially aswell.
Some people rather hug thier dsl lines instead of the girlfriends:)

It's actually scary, because this kid doesn't read anything, even in the threads he posts in.
He just posts.

It's me me me me me me me me me all the time.
He takes no time out to actually find what the original thread was about, it's concepts, it's direction and any conclusions he could make from it.

I try to remember myself at 15 and seem to remember that while I was a total little bast@rd, at least I was an inquisitive total little bast@rd, with a voracious appetite for books, my ZX Spectrum, other geeky passtimes, getting drunk and learning how to be a "rebel"

I'm not sure if kids are getting more retarded, I think that the internet just attracts retards, like moths to the flame.

Retarded is too harsh a word - I'd say it's complete lack of attention span. Many young kids can't focus on something for more than 5 minutes.
