More than welcome to call me a noob. I graciously concede in advance. However, I still need help.

My PC and Telkom line were struck and damaged by lightning. Lessons learnt. Machine replaced. Line fixed. I finally managed to set up my Netgear router to the internet. The settings on my email were corrupted (I googled all sorts of errors, some I fixed, but not all) and decided to format my PC and start fresh.

Format and Windows 7 successfully sorted.

My internet is still working through the router (this is being typed off my iPad). I just cannot get my PC to find the router. Does this make sense?

Nothing has changed with the cables or connections. Double checked just in case to see that they are all correctly plugged in. I have googled all sorts of possible errors including checking how I should set this up. Nada. Nothing. Niks.

I am beyond desperate. So any assistance or advice (except psychological therapy or the like) will be gratefully accepted. I really am short of ideas.

Many thanks... McT

When you plug your PC in, are the activity lights on the LAN port flashing or active at all? I am assuming your are connected via cable as you mentioned cables.

All lights are green on the router including the cable from the PC to router.

Type in:

Code:
ipconfig /all

into the command prompt (Start -> Run -> cmd) and post what it spits out.

IP Routing Enabled = No

Assuming this should be "Yes"?

Nothing assigned, I'm afraid

Can't you just take a photo of the ipconfig output? If there is nothing assigned then it means the network card isn't working, but you say there are activity lights so I'm confused.

STEP = for Newbie i Suggest to follow Step by Step

Step1 = Start the registry editor. Select the start menu, and enter REGEDIT.EXE into either the "Run" program or the search box. The run program will be available for Windows XP operating systems and the search box will be used for Vista and Windows 7 operating systems.

Step2 = Find the sub key that reads: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters. Scroll down or by use the search option to locate it. Make sure that you select the right one, especially if you haven't backed up your registry recently.

Step3 = Set the registry values into the corresponding section to enable IP routing in Windows XP:
Value Name: IpEnableRouter
Value Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 1. This will enable transmission control protocol and IP forwarding, also called TCP/IP forwarding, for all of the connections installed on your computer. TCP/IP forwarding is essentially the same thing as IP routing.

Step4 = Exit the registry editor to complete IP routing in Windows XP and other Windows operating systems.

Another easier method for Windows 7

Step1 = Go to Run type "services.msc" without quotes

Step2 = Search the service "Routing and Remote Access", it will be disable by default.

Step3 = To enable it right click on it and then select properties and change the "Startup Type" to
"Manual" if you want to start it when you require or
"Automatic" to start it whenever computer boots on else
"Automatic delayed" if you want it to initiate a little bit later after the other services in your computer are started at boot time.

Step4 = Now apply and press ok

Step5 = Now right click the Routing and Remote access service and press start and let the progress bar complete.

Step6 = Now goto run and type "cmd" to get command prompt and type "ipconfig /all". and you should see this line "IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes" which will be the third line. This means Routing has been enabled.
You can disable by changing the startup type to disabled and check "ipconfig /all" to see the status.

Step7 = Note: The services method was tried in Win 7 Ultimate Other versions may not have that service listed

The lightening could have blown the LAN port on the MOBO as well?

OP: Do you have a wifi dongle to connect to your PC?

Very possible, but I don't think it's likely that there would be any activity lights in that case.

The router showed green for Internet and green for the replacement cable.

Even more basic checks. :D

Are you able to login to the router from the iPad? Check if DHCP is enabled and that you didn’t specify a range with one IP address.
Run the Windows Network Trouble-shooter. It will also give an indication of what is preventing the connection.

I am connected to the net using my iPad. I can see the router IP address. DHCP?
