Internet Explorer 9 and Firefox 4 face off

Running FF 4 beta... freaking awesome compared to firefox 3... IE 8 was just dead slow. gonna download IE 9 just now and give it a go and then judge ...

Firefox 4 sucks...

You've gotta install extensions just to get back functionality that used to be default in older versions! And there's practically no compatible extensions available. If FF 5 (Which is only 3 months away) again results in incompatibilites, developers will lose interest and Mozilla will go down the tubes....

Cleaner interface has resulted in dumbing down the browser.

I'll stay with 3.6 for as long as possible......

IE9 is very smooth to operate, only show the neccessary menus and functionality. The true 64-bit version also adds extra whooooshhh.

+1, also loving IE9 so far...

I'll stick to Chrome, thanks. Everything else seems so clunky in comparison.

FireFox all the way. Although on my old, slow laptop Chrome is used but I wouldnt change to it just yet for my pc

IE9 and Firefox 4 ready to battle

Microsoft has released Internet Explorer 9 and Firefox 4 is coming next week. How do the two shape up?

I thought I would put my bias aside and try IE9 after abandoning it when Firefox first came out. Very slick, but one BIG problem it will never be able to solve:

Firefox has a MASSIVE Add-On repository. I couldn't find even an AdBlock add-on for IE9  . I also very much doubt whether Firebug people will even consider porting it to IE9...heaven forbid!

What is the difference between AdBlock in FF and the Pop-Up Blocker (with all its customisable settings) in IE9 ?
In IE9 there is also an extensive Add-In Manager - letting one En/Dis-able any Add-In and also provide you with an idea how long it takes to load, knowing what the impact on your browsing speed would be.

Yeah, I know about the Add-In Manager in IE9..i already told you...i tired finding the Add-Block add-on...I couldn't find it. Couldn't find a Speed-Dial add-in either (I don't like the default attempt at speed dial on the first tab).

To answer you question between the difference bewteen AdBlock and Pop-Up Blocker: AdBlock blocks ads in the page (no pop-up windows involved). Pop-ups block new windows from popping up, mostly Adverts.

And example of AdBlock in action:

Goto http://www.iafrica.com/. There are about 6 adverts scattered on the page (the most obvious one being right at the top). AdBlock won't show any of them and I can choose to hide more. I never read ads, so I save myself alot of bandwidth by not downloading ads.

Maybe IE9's Popup Blocker is more powerful, but I doubt it will allow you to hide random advert banners you don't like.

Geez, so IE is STILL lagging behind, even though they've had all this time to get back into the market. :wtf:

HTML5 stats are low too...does this mean web developers are going to fight with IE again because it doesn't support the HTML what the other browswers do!?! I was hoping those days of coding for 2 browsers (IE and the rest) are over!

Can you cause certain pictures embedded in a website to not be loaded with IE9, based on a filter (e.g. /ads/*.jpg)? Can you cause all external pictures from certain domains to not be displayed (e.g. http://ads.spammer.com/ads/*.jpg)? It's more than a popup-blocker. Can you selectively ublock ads easily (e.g. on MyBB)?

Anyone noticed that the fonts on IE9 are a little blurred compared to on Chrome?

I opened a Facebook page (IE9) on one side and another Facebook page (Chrome) on another window and compared the two.

I find the text on Chrome much sharper.

I did the same with myBB and I definitely find that the text is sharper on Chrome than on IE9

P.S. The ClearType feature is on and adjusted.

Maybe that's the biggest difference between IE9 and Firefox...its users. Firefox users know what they want from a browser.
IE users just want to read the news, weather, gmail and venture into the dark world of online banking. ;-)

All respect to IE users (my parents included)
