Internet Explorer just closes?

There may be some gremlins lurking there... have u ran the usual tools like

  • Stinger
  • Spybot
  • AdAware
  • HijackThis
  • Antivurus
  • WindowsUpdate

?

Amongst others.

As I said in my post:
Have Sygate Personal Firewall, (Escan) Anti-virus fully up to date, Spybot Search and Destroy installed and immunized, XP Service Pack 1 with almost all latest patches

BillyBoy, SP1 leaves your system open to many viruses and holes. The other programs will only help a bit. Its like a person moving buckets under a leaking roof instead of fixing the roof. Everytime you move the bucket, a new leak appears or an older leak gets worse. With you using SP1, I take it you are using a cracked version of XP and therefore are unable to install SP2. This is also the reason why you cant try the Microsoft Spyware software?

Try running http://housecall.trendmicro.com and see if that picks up anything

have a final look at hijackthis and find a rootkit detection tool, beyond that i leave it up to other members for a comment.

I am using legit version of XP , just dont want to have SP2 problems!
My Windowsupdates were 100% up to date, apart from SP2.
Anyway - installed Hijackthis - found some suspect search engine links.
Downloaded MS Spyware solution.
Ran Spybot Search and Destroy again, after downloading latest updates - and it found Gain.Gator and Gain.DashBar - so removed them. Last week with latest updates for Spybot it found nothing - must be new variant, which I assume my kids kindly installed unknowingly.
I am sure this was the cause, but why was new installation of Firefox also failing?
Will test browsing now that Gator removed.

BillyBoy, SP1 has more problems than SP2. SP2 contains the bug fixes and improvements for SP1 as well as new security features. Many of which do not get released through WindowsUpdate as single updates.

Also, you do realise that MS will be forcing all XP users to install SP2 soon. If you have WindowsUpdate set to download automatically, it will be downloading in the background pretty soon if it hasnt already started. Rather install it now and get it over and done with. When your system is totally uptodate, you can then check how or where the spyware/adware is coming through.

listen carefully check your memory usage then run registry mechanic4.0 then go back one restore point.check your program files /internet explorer for hijacker seach foru.com/seach assistant. this fixed my one

I had the same problem with IE just exiting a few months ago and found that installing the newest version of Java fixed it.. mighty odd but that is the nature of M$ software now & then :)
