Hi all,

The internet here at work is pathetically slow it's almost unusable. They have been promising for months to sort it out but nothing ever gets done.

No one here really knows what's going on, so a lot of uncertainties.

At the moment they have two separate 4meg lines shared between +- 90 people. We recently moved over to Gmail for Businesses so that causes extra strain on the lines.

What would be the best option to go with, line and ISP, so I can forward it to the relevant people.

I have looked at Neotel fibre and Vox Fishbone but not sure which is better or suited.

Thanks.

Question is, how much data are you pushing through your lines? Also, how much are you willing to pay for internet?

8Mb for 90 people is a a rather large ratio. That leaves 9KB/s per person assuming all 90 are online simultaneously.
A fishbone would work well, but then you'd be better off getting another 2-4 4Mb lines, otherwise you'd be where you are now.

I'm not sure how much data is going through, I just know everyone is always online and we all use email in the cloud. So there are always uploading and downloading of attachments and such.

I don't think the pricing would be a problem. They are prepared to get more lines, probably 4 4Mb lines.

A friend of mine has 2x 4Mb lines at home and has a router that load balances the traffic for them. It doesn't put the lines to full use (ie https will use one connection), but two of these, or a Quad-WAN router will sort your office in a fair manner.

Okay cool, thanks. I shall suggest this to the IT guy and hopefully they can get something sorted out with Vox.

Thanks

Get 4 lines.

Just make sure you are using business accounts on them. The MWEB business 4meg data product is 2grand a month. If you're paying less than that for data per line you are not getting quality.

I'd say concact tech concepts and ask about channel bonding.

Would probably be the best solution Furzana will be able to help you:

120 odd people here on 4mbit (not adsl), and it's absolutely fine. It's not the quantity of bandwidth, but rather the quality of the bandwidth and how it's managed.

Throwing money at the OPS problem won't necessarily fix the problem. "No one here really knows what's going on" is more important than increasing the bandwidth. If there's abuse on the network, increasing the bandwidth is just going to make the problem worse.

Determine what's going on, what is using your bandwidth, and why... Then you can make educated decisions on increasing the bandwidth, when, why, and by how much.
