Hello guys,

This is my 1st post ! :p and i would like if the community can help out.

I have moved to a new Residence in Pretoria and the sucky thing about the move is that i cant take my 10 meg Telkom line with me because there isn't any Telkom exchanges strong enough for a 10 meg adsl and they dont want to upgrade the exchange... so im now stuck with a choice of a 2 meg line... and thats not going to cut it. I live with 2 other friends and all 3 of us are I.T professionals and we do like our series and gaming and all the nice things internet brings to your home, and a 2 meg between 3 people sounds like a silly bar joke (3 guys walk into a bar...)

My prev address was in Lynnwood glen and i have moved to Murrayfield (both are in Pretoria) im not going to enclose the Exact address... don't want any serial killers popping up at my house  (ha ha) but the place we stay in is a uge complex and everything around the complex has fiber or has VDSL but the complex doesn't have jack *****...

I have looked at wireless and that's just crazy expensive and value for money just packed its bag and climbed onto the next bus to nope village. Fiber.... N/A ADSL 386 kbps - 2mbps (yea i know right...) satelite - is sitting in a bar and getting drunk, because no one wants to pay for his services... and last but not least 3G/LTE yep great! speeds are fast enough but the problem is the cap! some deals are uncapped but they have a FUP (Fair usage policy) of 50 gigs and then they shape you to ***** and or you pay your butt cheeks off for a good deal...

So at the end im out of ideas and don't know how to proceed from here, i need something that is fast and uncapped (doesn't need to be unshaped, but would be a bonus) and wont make my wallet want move out of the house to find something cheaper...

Your only option atm is ADSL really, given your needs. You can request 3 telkom lines I think. But you will pay through the nose.

Other than that, you are pretty screwed tbh

Send me your Telkom tel number by PM at the premises and I'll check the availability of ports and speeds for your connection...

Yea, thought about doing so but paying R 450 x 3 for 3 times 2 megs (if they even stay at that speeds...) so yep im kinda screwed

Will do so just need to find my Telkom number somewhere... :erm:

I'm surprised that all of you are IT Professionals, and you don't know your options...

First: http://www.telkom.co.za/today/unlimited-broadband/ Check your area and you may qualify for the special unlimited broadband with LTE.

Second: if you don't qualify for it. you can still get LTE from Telkom. at a price anyway...

Third: Bitco. But it seems that they are not offering HOME uncapped anymore. It may be a good thing. Their FUP are ridiculous.

Fourth: Neotel. They have a decent Wireless Plan. Not sure about coverage, but their network is Rock Solid. Their customer service is terrible anyway. But if you are running on their network, you will (almost) never go down, so you will never have to call them, which is a good thing.

There are probably some small wisp on the area as well. Maybe somebody can share some decent alternative suppliers.

Ok so everything you just mentioned... i have looked at...

1.The unlimted from telkom has a FUP of 100 gigs and then they shape you to *****. and in the small fine print you get 4 meg up untill next year March and then they downgrade you to a 2 meg. also if you move out of the area of service you still need to pay the money 24 contract....

2. LTE/3G.... Im not rich so thats why i stated.... i would like to have money to spend also....

3. Bitco.... yep FUP is ridiculous and you are binded for 24 months or you can drop 5k and buy the equipment and then you just pay for the services... and just as you said 'ridiculous'

4. Neotel takes 3 weeks for installation (if you are lucky) and they are also quite expensive 10 meg for 1.8k ?? Hah! and you bind yourself in a 24 month contract and doesnt matter if you move to some other weird place and there is no service YOU still need to pay....

I think i know my options pretty well... next time don't be a douche, please....

Regards,

Cool thanks! i have done the survey and looked around on the site but i was wondering.... do you have any idea how long it would take?

To reach Murrayfield I would say it depends if you are north or south of the N4. Rollout south will in all likelihood start before north. Rollout should commence early next year for Lynnwood, with the first homes on-line planned for March to May. Things will then expand from there. We will have more details in the coming weeks as Frogfoot completes the planning.

If the people surrounding complex all have VDSL/Fiber then why not make friends with one of them, buy two wug kits and set them up for point-2-point. Offer your new friend a month+1 line rental plus a little over the top to cover his electricity and a 6 pack of beers every week. Once you have the link up and running put the modem in bridging mode and let each room mate purchase their own ISP account. Or pool for a uncapped account.

Then of course I just spit-balling, since you'd need a IECS license to do this legally ;).

yea... was thinking about that but they are mostly old people and they are not interested in these funny things as well as trust is a hard thing to get (doesn't come easily) and thanks for letting me know about the IECS license, did not know that! haha. Would of done the whole thing and then end up getting screwed at the end of it.

Well it sounds like you did all your homework... Too late...

If internet is such a consideration for you you should've done the research before you moved. Sorry but there's not much you can do, either compromise with one of the options you've found or move.

but but i dont wana compromise :( the place we got now is a STEAL for the price we are paying... have a great view of most of Pretoria and the place is quite big and very very secure (haven't broken in or stolen something from someone in 15 years)

Then the best option is to go 2 meg x3 and run them together and then sit back and hope for the best (holding thumbs) untill fiber rolls out in the area....
