Internet hurting newspapers

Like other US newspapers, Gannett papers have been grappling with a steep drop in print advertising revenue, steadily declining circulation and the migration of readers to free news online.

Good. Newspapers are a relic of the past and the amount of paper they use and waste is disgusting.
Almost everyone has the Internet or a mobile phone with Internet acess, so I think the logical step is to move to online media entirely.

Criag's List killed them. At least there will be plenty of quality journalists ripe for the picking.

That said I enjoy my morning paper - there's nothing quite like newsprint. :o

even their online presence does not impress me much...they don't allow public commentary. :(

as if they the alpha and omega of news reporting

Really? I'm hard pressed to find a news site that doesnt allow comments etc in one form or another.

There is a lot of hysteria about this with everyone running around in circles and wringing their hands with the advent of citizen journalism. Conventional journalists just need to reinvent themselves, their skills are even more essential. With the advent of the citizen journalist, journalism will improve IMO. Along with the good stuff on the Internet there is going to be a **** load of dross. Regular journalists have the training and just need to change their focus and become editors and filters of this dross. Start their own web sites with appropriate (vetted) links. Become celebrities and status symbols (I subscribe to XXX website <preen>). To circumvent googling and information overload, would you subscribe to a website with accurate, pre-vetted info in your interest area? I would.
