Internet pirates to lose web access

But some Internet service providers opposed the move, with one of them saying it was prepared to take the matter to Britain's courts.

Now this I'm glad to hear!
I also thought it was illegal for ISPs to monitor their clients' usage unless requested by a formal court/police request in an investigation?

I'm still not sure that I like the argument about "lost revenue". While I get the point I still recon it's based on the flawed idea that whoever downloads will not visit the cinema. While it may be true for some, I recon it's not a valid argument as a general rule.

Maybe, just maybe, a couple of people who download never intended to go to the cinema either way...

Who remembers this same issue with VHS at the time & when one could copy a Music cd for the first time....

They need to find new ways to market rather then try stop people...

look at spotify no one now needs to download an mp3 ever again!!! & it's legal

Hulu for TV the world needs to change how they market their products & make revenue.

Exactly!

If you want people to go to the cinema make the experience more appealing. And it would help if they did not rip people off with the cost of cooldrinks and popcorn.

If you want people to buy CDs then offer something in the CD that will make them want the entire package rather than just the songs.

If you want people to buy software make the prices reasonable in all currencies.

It's the UK, a country in which the government has been actively spying on its citizens for decades.

Just another way for governments to protect large corporations that make billions yearly. Nothing new.

Well I can say that personally I don't download films. I do rent them though. Renting AFAIK doesn't provide revenue for the big media corporates anyway. I have only actually purchased around 5 DVDs myself.

If I had more bandwidth I would probably download films, but I doubt I would ever go to the cinema to watch it.

It does dude, how do you think you are able to rent movies? because the people bought the dvd and then rented it out.

They make tons of cash from places that rent movies out. These days i have seen 10 copes of a movie at block buster. That is just one store.

Pointless Political Pandering to Profiteering Pundits

on the ground it is not going to do a thing.

People will move to encryption making it harder for the police to catch the real criminals, they will simply swap more stuff offline and if disconnected they will find ways to connect again using different details. No problem.

Companies make more money from the rental bussines than they do from cinemas.

Of course they make money out of selling the DVDs to the store initially doob, that I'm not arguing.

However I don't believe they make money out of each individual rental of the afore-mentioned DVDs.

Not many media (if any at all) are available for electronic download in South Africa. One will never be able to stop this unless movies, tv series, games, etc. are made available for legal downloads at reasonable prices. Itunes is a good example. Legal music files at reasonable prices in the US. But not available in South Africa. These execs are sitting in their board rooms scratching their heads. They are so far behind in terms of the internet and the information age. They should all be fired and replaced with more forward thinking and progressive business individuals. The time of the baby boomers is long over! My guess is that none or very little of these old execs are registered on any forums, blogs, and so forth. Some don’t even know how to do electronic banking. Ironic, seeing that they are supposed to lead the industry.

I don’t want to buy a CD or a DVD anymore but would rather prefer the electronic version. In a hundred years from now people will laugh at how ridiculous this situation is.

ISP should not make personal information available, even if requested to do so. Invasion of privacy is a serious and contentious issue.

Yes, but you see, dvd stores have to buy those dvds at huge prices...at roughly about R400 per dvd. Now think globally how many dvds do they sell to dvd rental stores :P

Technically they don't buy the DVD at huge prices, they are actually buying the right to lease it to other parties. Nevertheless I understand what you are saying.

this law will get rid of the poor stupid people who don't use encrypted/tor p2p's

Well if movies didn't have this segmented release crap all over the world. People would not pirate as much.

First the americans see it then europe then asia. Even a movie made in South Africa like district 9 was shown here after the Americans had watched it already

I used to buy Loads of DVDs and I found that the price was quite reasonable as specially when they went on special.

I enjoy keeping my favorite movies everything else I rent from Video Stores.

Now I upgraded to Bluray it is double the price in some cases 6 times the price. movies that were not selling for R50.00 on DVD are now selling for R299.00 on Bluray.

To make things worse they release the Movies to DVD and Bluray in America almost 2 months before they release it anywhere else.

An example of this is Tranformers 2 only getting released here at the end of November but its been out for a month already in the states.

So these american get it encode it to H264 and for a 8 gig download you get a Full HD movie better that DVD quality.

So if you want to reduce Piracy let everyone get the movies at the same time and stop ripping us off

And so they should! Pirating is the bane of the earth, not just the Indian Ocean.
