Hi there

Firstly I would like to apologise if this has been posted in the wrong thread as I wasn't entirely sure where it should go. I am wanting to ask the community about different internet providers.

I would like to upgrade from using a mobile data connection from Cell C to a Fixed Wireless LTE or ADSL connection. I have been looking through different internet providers but I am not sure who I should go with. I was considering going with Afrihost, with their deal for 50GB or 100GB but after reading some reviews I am having some doubts.

I would like to pay around R400-R650 per month for 50GB-100GB and the download speed must be around 10-30MB. If there are better providers than Afrihost then I would like to know.

Thank you so much.

@Moonspirit it depends on what infrastructure is available where you want to use it.
I was lucky and used telkom adsl without issues for almost 3 years. Now using telkom lte with Rain due to not needing uncapped data any longer.
Fibre is finally being laid on the main streets here, but not into complex yet.

If you have VDSL in your area, go for it.
20 Mbps - R503 to Telkom.
100 GB capped to Vox for R79.
Fibre is too expensive and LTE is becoming so cluttered, soon pigeons will be a better bet.

I only left Afrihost, because I moved to a spot where they (and everyone else except Voda) don't have coverage. Other than that, I can only give them a 100% rating.
 Curious what people say about them.

Check on hellopeter

I was with Afrihost from 1/1/2014 to 30/3/2019 and I was very happy there.
Only left because I switched to Telkom LTE.

Hmm. If it were between the Afrihost Fixed Wireless and Vox VSDL or ADSL, then one would rather go with Vox??

That would be in terms of how fast the internet speed is and customer service if there are any issues.

I could consider Telkom as an option too as it is the landline at my home but I'm not sure how their prices compare to Vox and Afrihost, along with how long installation would take.

Depends on technician in your area. My line was installed and activated within 8 days by telkom. The telkom unlimited home deal on a month to month can't be beaten. Purchase a second hand router and you're good to go.

I will have a look at their website and will definitely consider it as one of my options. Will internet speed depend on the package which is chosen?

Which router do you think would be the best one to go with if buying it second hand?

I picked up a zyxel sbg3300 for R69 at cash converters 3 years ago.
Worked well, I've now retired it for B315 and B525 combination.
If you're in Pretoria you're welcome to collect it and put it to use if you're going the adsl route.
I wouldn't waste my time with the online application system. Best get a cup of coffee, couple of donughts and join the nearest telkom store queue. Don't be shy to offer the consultant 1 while there, it's amazing how they can speed things up, when we're not in a rush.

Unfortunately I reside in Cape Town although thank you for the offer, it is appreciated.

Telkom is definitely going to be one that will be considered. It would be great to get a few more opinions perhaps and then I will decide who I will go with.

If you are only going to use 100 GB a month LTE is probably a better deal for you. Much better speed than ADSL (even VDSL depending on how close you are to the exchange). If there is Fibre in your area it might be an option, but LTE will probably be cheaper for low data usage. ADSL also seems to be going downhill in most areas, so it is better to go with a newer technology.

Telkom LTE 30GB package (60GB + 60GB for some reason) is R555 and the 50GB package (100GB + 100GB) is R755. Speeds should be much higher than typical ADSL speed.

I think if the internet speed is better with LTE, then I would prefer to go with that. I am not sure if there is Fibre where I reside although I will have to check on that one, as there may be. I just think if I were to go with Fibre, then it will definitely be in the R850+ price range, which I am not sure I want to spend.

Depends who provides the fibre and what speed you want. I think fibre packages start at the R500-R600 range for a 10Mbps line. Have a look on Frogfoot, Vumatel or Octotel. Vodacom is a lot more expensive. Think Openserve is slightly more expensive.

But still, for less than 100GB a month LTE should do the job, and then you will hopefully get faster speed as well.

Hmmm, I see. I will have a look at those as well. Thank you for the information.

There are just so many options that it is hard to decide which package and provider to go with!
