Internet set for domain name big bang

The internet looked set for one of the biggest shakeups in its brief history if the web's regulator votes this week as expected to allow new domain names such as .love or .paris

.paris? Is that the city, the hotel heiress or the nap-time man of communications?

Tens of thousands of dollars (euros) would be required, noted Loic Damilaville, head of the AFNIC association of French domain names.

Yeah, right, "required". Not that it would COST that much to actually do - that's just the price they think the market will bear. It shouldn't cost any more to set up a new TLD than to set up any other domain name.

What on earth is that for? Why would a billion people on this planet need a top level domain like .paris? Surely that is of such limited scope? how many websites can there be in one city to justify such a top level domain? why don't they just make a .city top level domain?
