Hi.

At home I've got a standard network setup: everything connects to the web through wifi access points.

At work I use an ethernet cable. Today I turned on Internet Sharing on my MBP to share my ethernet connection with my iPhone over wifi.

As soon as I got home though, I was sort of expecting everything to just work again, but it seems my MBP was stuck in thinking it has to share the non-existent ethernet connection, so it wouldn't connect to the wifi. And when I turned off Internet Sharing, it had forgotten my home networks. The networks came back as soon as I retyped the password for one of them though.

Question: Can I have my cake and eat it? Can I use everything at home on wifi and at work share my connection, all automatically?

Go to System Preferences and create locations.
Adding a network location
A network location is a group of network settings for your various network services (your computer’s Ethernet port, modem port, and AirPort Card, for example).

If you often change network settings, you may find switching between locations quicker and easier than repeatedly modifying individual groups of settings.

For example, you might want to make a location for “home,” where you connect to the Internet with a telephone modem, and a location for “office,” where you connect to your company network and the Internet using Ethernet or AirPort.

To add a network location:

Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and click Network.

Choose Edit Locations from the Location pop-up menu, and then click Add (+).

Enter settings for each network connection service you want to use in that location.

After you create your locations, you can switch all of your network settings by choosing a different location from the Location pop-up menu.

Hi BobJones, you would think that locations would work, but Internet Sharing seems to be independent of the network settings. Sigh. Seems like I'll have to manually turn it off and retype my network settings each night. So much for "it just works".

Anyone else got a similar setup?

I regularly use internet sharing - I've got different locations set up and just create the adhoc network from the network icon when necessary. I dont have to retype settings though.
