So I've been running a smart home for a couple of years now, but I've had some bad luck in the last couple of weeks with older devices failing:
- Two Sonoff basics failing (no longer connects, or connects very intermittently)
- Yeelight RGB blew as I turned it on, no longer coming online
- Tonight an old flashed BNETA power-measuring plug failed.

All of these were WiFi, but I've started looking at replacing some of this with a Zigbee network. I even ended up buying some devices last year ( https://uzg.zig-star.com/product/ - see discussion https://mybroadband.co.za/forum/thr...ips-tricks-your-configs.1059800/post-33846537) but haven't had time to set it up yet.

So now that I've had a couple of devices fail, what would you do? Replace them with Zigbee relays / power measuring plugs / lights? Keep them WiFi?

I mean the failing doesn’t relate in any way to the protocol.

To really have Zigbee work properly you need a solid Zigbee network with wired in routers or a bunch of Aqara Gateway type devices.

The USB hack job variety was atrocious in my house. Until I got my Aqara T1 smart light acting as the router it was a terrible experience.

As such I only really use Zigbee for sensors at presents and don’t see myself going out of my way to change away from WiFi actively.

Running both is probably the better answer.

had a similar issue last week with newer smart devices. my 2 sonoff smart water valves controling my gas geyser & washing machine went offline and the outside smart irrgation valve (matter). even my tenda mesh system went offline. had to reboot the whole system and pair devices again to get it all back. the only 2 smart devices that stayed online was the matter temp & humidity & door sensor.

not sure what caused it, maybe one or more of the following had an update - fibre router / sonoff / tenda mesh / ZBBridge-U ?
first time I've had mulitple devices go offline in one go.

I don't see any mention of a Zigbee bridge. What do you have in that regard? I have a number of WIFI and Zigbee sensors and devices spread across the house. I've had no problems with the Zigbee stuff. All my newer devices have been Matter compliant so I'll just go with that in future. Might be worth looking at depending on what you are using as a bridge currently.
