My uncapped IS started to get very slow last week some time, so I logged a fault with my local ISP thru whom I got the account. After some traceroute disputing with IS things were back to normal. But I got a rather mushy call from my local ISP today to say it had been slowed down because of high receive utilization ( "leeching" one assumes ) or something like that. I am up to 66GB this month which is quite a bit less than last month.

Has anyone else with an uncapped IS account been informed of anything like this? Does anyone know if they really do it, and if so at what level of traffic?

Not sure about uncapped, but my 5/25GB account is up the creek on almost every protocol, even http!

What IS account do you have? I know the Gamco ones have some sort of provision like that, got one through Openweb and I've never heard anything like that before. does seem slow though.

Today was extremely slow with Uncapped IS account.Phoned them about slow speeds but they said everything was fine.Didnt even brother arguing. Most likely they lying.

I think if you do more than 10gb in 3 days you get slowed down? or something like that?

I only did 12GB during this whole month :( Their shaping policies are becoming a tad ridiculous

I've done almost 200GB in a month before without being slowed down, you get some accounts like that and you get some that are true uncapped, or supposed to be anyway.

Have a "backup" IS account here too. It's terrible. Pings overseas are constantly 1300ms+, and even local sites seem much slower than SAIX.

Close to 1TB traffic this year. Never noticed any slowdown in http. Shaping of torrents in business hours has been getting more and more severe. Special comes to an end this month. Next couple of months I'm back to rationing. :(

Think its more of an international problem, my local downloads are fast, intl's not bad anyway, just could be better.

My local pings and downloading on the IS account are OK, but the browsing seems really slow - even to sites hosted at IS.

The way IS uncapped works is like this - 1. You link via telkom ADSL network at a contention ratio of approx 200 to 1 (200 ADSL lines sharing the same bandwidth (512k,1Gb,whatever)) - this is the only way to supply broadband affordably.
2. The IS modem then creates a VPN to IS, where you hit their contention ratio of 8 to 1.
So on a bad day, or an area with a lot of ADSL users, you could be sitting with a contention ratio of 1600 to 1. Dialup connections have been known to run faster........

What IS account do you have?

It's a normal, original satellite uncapped.

It is running fine now, since I complained. I had just not heard of IS having any kind of slow pool for "abusers", and am trying to find out more.

Thanks for the input everyone.
