Hey chaps.

Has anyone else found IS to be really dodge lately? I mean, in the last month or so? Various sites don't lookup, then they do, I get random bad packet loss but only international bandwidth, local is hunky dory.

This is on an OpenWeb IS account in Durban.

Geeky stats here...

Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed: 384 kbps/128 kbps
Line Attenuation: 17 db/5.5 db
Noise Margin: 31 db/24 db

Telkom's HTTP speed test.
Your line speed is approximately 441.1 Kbps or 54.1 kBytes/sec

Sentech's 512K speed test: 37.54 KBps, or 300.35 Kbps

IS international works off Satalite. So its based on weather (here or in UK or wherever the sat is connected to).

Satalite has huge pings too

Yeah - I have been getting the dodge DNS problems too. nslookup to a domain on 168.210.2.2 fails, but use a saix server and it works for eg.

Hey Friends,

OpenWeb clients may replace their IS DNS servers with ours:

Primary: 196.40.108.26
Secondary: 196.40.108.27

They should improve your browsing experience two-fold.

Kind regards

Last 2days IS international has be a royal pain in the ass, up and down

Must be *** on days like this for IS support

"Sorry, its the rain"
"But the sun is shining now!"
"err, yes, but the moisture in the air..."
"moisture? you're joking!"
"no, and then uhmm, those sunspots are flaring now as well"

They should run the sat off C band, a lot more resilient to weather etc.

Ku band, what i assume IS uses should only get affected in severe thunderstorms etc, and then how long does a thunderstorm last?

We had an incoming C band link in ct at one stage, ran like a charm till the company stopped using the satellite that covered SA :/

The SMS's that IS send out mostly have to do with core router problems, i've received only 1 or 2 sms's about severe weather at RadioKop

Damn I think its starting to rain again, IS support is getting ready, I can see it now like a big sign flashing in the support offices! "RAIN STORM!!!" "GET READY!!!".

But I mean it was my choice to use IS so I live with the fact that somedays my international will be non-existant! Think I will be getting my self a WA prepaid next month, just for a "RAINY DAY", pun intended! :p

Hey! u jinxed it now! hehe

Intl bouncing up and down AGAIN, GRRRR

Trying to download something and im starting to get a bit peeved

3rd attempt to upload a 47 meg zip of a photo assigment due yesterday, but oh wait telkom was down yesterday ..... where is my passport :P

AHHH FSK JEEEZ!!!! This seriously cannot be happening!

Aaarg! this is so annoying!

I reckon we force IS's SLA to state that if the satellite goes down, THEY, have to fork out fo us to get fibre access until the satellite is sorted out. ;)

whats worse, it seems the cisco hasnt got pppoe passthrough enabled, wonder whats the chances of them enabling that so i could atleast use saix while they are down :/
