Hi,
I've contacted my ISP to ask IS, but I just got a generic answer.
Except for this one dude, he really tried to help.

Getting to the point.
IS use something they like to call the "star rating system"
it has to do with you line speed Vs. the amount you download.

I'd like to know:
  • How each Star affects my line. (each step from 5 stars to 1 star)
  • What brings your star rating down. (each step from 5 stars to 1 star)
  • How do I get my Star rating back up. (each step from 1 star to 5 stars)

I'd like detailed answers, eg. if the system/server works with % and not MB then I'd like to know how much %.

I've got an excel file that contains Internet transfer logs that I pull from IS.
I'd like accurate stats and ratings on the stats page.

This is something I hope someone can answer for me, would be much appreciated.

It is not possible to tell you in quantities where/how.

IS rate you where you fall %-wise in their userbase.

how much do their highest users use?
how many users do they provide a service too?

if you know the answers to those questions you'll know the answers to your questions...

We resell these accounts & I have tested the lower end ones thoroughly.

My general consensus is that the accounts with a rating of 5 stars are amazing with high speed (line dependent) & low latency.

I think these accounts have a general bad reputation, and that's mainly due to the use of a "rolling window" combined with holes & issues in the "star rating system" which are as follows:
  1. No user access to view their star ratings against their data usage.
  2. Usage is carried over into a new month based on a rolling window which makes the current available usage monthly statistics null & void at times.
  3. It is possible to avoid the new month rolling window by cancelling & re-opening a new account (each month) which if done has ramifications on the % groups that include rolling window usage to apply ratings.

I would like to see how the system fairs with the rolling window dropped & only limiting users based on the % of the pool.

There was a thread awhile ago where the guy closed his account and opened a more expensive account than the previous one. Somehow/someway they moved his old stats over to the new account even though it was meant to be a brand new account.

I'm running a 1Mb uncapped IS account at night (7pm until 7am) solely for torrents, many of which are poorly seeded.

Although I have a 6Mb line I opted for this account because the shaping rules are more relaxed:

From the axxess Just Uncapped AUP http://www.axxess.co.za/uncapped
* 10 day Rolling Window - If you're in Top 20% of IS users for the 384kbs, 512kbs and 1024kbs connection speeds, your traffic will be prioritized according to a star rating *
* User Policy applies 24/7, Weekends & Public Holidays
* For the 4096kbps Accounts, if you're in Top 50% of IS users for this connection speed, you will be shaped

I have done an average of 120Gb/mth on this account since May with "Full Access" and think it's a bargain at R296/mth.

Hope this helps :)

Well that would be a good thing for the rest ;) I confirmed last week that one could cancel an account & re-open it to have full speed, apparently people do this every month.

This star rating is a sham, I tried the afrihost 1mbps uncappped for R1 and my service was throttled 50% after 25GB, well before the first 10days. Then at one point in the month I used less than 1GB in 10days, and still my speed was improved at all. Infact no matter what, the service was just throttled more and more irrespective.

Unless you're with Openweb, the IS accounts are crud!

Gold accounts with openweb are the best on IS... Not sure how MrBEEP does it...

I posted this in the Plugg thread

Good and Bad news

I joined Plugg on 12-09-2011
Took the 4MB data option. (2 Concurrent connections)
Using the account on a 1MB line and a 384kb line (process of upgrading to 1MB)

Good
The 1st 3 days were excellent full line speed 24 hours
I managed 19GB in 3 days.

Bad
Yesterday i got throttled down to speeds of 5KB max
Webpages took over 15 seconds to load.

I emailed Plugg and this was the response

With regards to the speed issue . Your current usage is sitting at +-18 gb over a period of 3 days which projects your usage at 180GB for a month Normal usage for a 4096 would be +- 80 - 100GB thus the system would currently be grouping you with clients on that usage level and as a result you would be contending for bandwidth with those level clients you would experience lower speeds . usage speed at night will be a lot faster though.

I think this policy is hopeless - from now till the end of the month i will be shaped
How do they know that my usage will stay the same through out the month? What if i just needed those large files?
They should just shape after a certain amount of bandwith used and not based on thumb sucking figures.

Really disappointed

The odd thing is that I spoke to someone at IS sales & they weren't 100% certain that the account usage carries over into a new month they conveyed to me the the individual ISP's are in control of their own policies which is contrary to what ISPs are saying and that the new months should warrant a fresh start?

120 gig on a 1meg account!!

I'm going to call you out on this.

On a 384 account I had full speed until around 8gigs.
At 12 gigs it was unusable for anything beyond light, slow surfing.

AVOID I.S. BANDWIDTH.

Here you go, I was 20Gb out, account went active mid May so lets call it 4mths to date giving about 100Gb/mth. The only reason usage is slowing is because I'm pretty much up to date on my UK TV stuff :)

Code:
Year Month Time Connected Sent Received Total

2011-September 179:43:18 26999.07 18125.02 45124.09

2011-April	No Data
2011-March	No Data

I reckon any uncapped account is OK if you use it wisely but I wouldn't have one as my only account.

So basically what all of you are saying is that I must get Openweb Uncapped Gold? :wtf:

EDIT: I'd still like that star details, there must be someone that knows the answers.
And yeah, I know it's based on percentage.

Those details are intentionally kept hidden by Internet Solutions to fark you around. No ISP will have access to that information.

@MickZA
"Hi ISP,
I'd like to know if you've got an uncapped account for me.
I'd like to download and torrent day and night, O and occasionally go to websites that shull not be named in public."

That should make for an intresting conversation. :P

@ghoti
Now that is stats I'll beleave!

Wow, that is quite a price tag on that.
What happens to the price if I only download at night?

I hope it comes down.
My HDD is currently in a LAN state (full) so I will be downloading casully and not heavy.

I know my line can do about 4GB a day.
Let's look at 384K line @ uhm ... 2GB a day?
Thus ~60GB for 30 days
