I can't connect to any of my dedicated servers at Internet Solutions since about 20 minutes ago. Even http://www.is.co.za is down.

I called them, and they've told me they're "down for maintenance", and "a notification was sent out"?

Surely that can't be possible? I certainly never received notification, and they can't just kill all their hosting for maintenance without implementing alternative routes or something? I have international clients making use of services hosted by my servers, and they aren't able to connect now. And who does maintenance at midnight and not like 4AM?!

It's bad enough they are down, but at least if something has blown up I can kind of understand, but maintenance?!

Scheduled maintenance is performed at data centers all over the world. It is done to ensure optimal network performance and uptime. The switches/routers might be getting upgraded, or a simple network reconfiguration. It really shouldn't be too much of an issue, as long as they notify you at least 1-2 weeks in advance.

If they did email you before then this is acceptable. Although I don't see any updates on their Twitter page (http://twitter.com/#!/IS_global), so they could probably post the notifications up on more public platforms before doing maintenance.

When a hosting service that major goes down for scheduled maintenance, they normally set up a temporary solution for hosting, for business critical applications.

I think the lack of such an implementation is what his complaining was mainly about :p

ROFL. I feel sorry for the fella you expect to do his maintenance at 4AM. I understand you have a business to run but really? Poor fella is also human, and need his sleep at normal hours.

I understand maintenance is necessary, but when I do maintenance it's at 4AM so as to reduce the impact on my customers. Considering I pay IS hundreds of thousands of rands a year, they could at least show my customers the same consideration. But they have now impacted my customers along with everybody elses, when I'm pretty sure they could have a) provided alternative routing during the maintenance, or b) done it at a time that has less impact.

I wasn't expecting the guy doing the maintenance to be awake for 24 hours and ruin his beauty sleep. But IS could have arranged that the technician was on night-duty in any case, and therefore working till 6AM regardless.

And yes, some advance notification would have been appreciated to!

Did their "scheduled" maintenance also include downed routers and half the Internet not working on IS lines? All our IS lines are having major routing issues. We got no notification and we spend a million a year with them. :/
