Internet speeds in the Uk

The will to change, is sometimes more important, than ability.

WTF do I mean by that ?

Well, Eng clearly overcharged for Spectrum, and Telco's couldnt afford to install 3g masts everwhere, so, service suffered. Rural communities were poorly serviced, and 4g is only being rolled-out 2015 .. but, hard-lines, are not constricted by corrupt monopolies, so, they have moved on .. or at least, the market place has forced them to move on.

Tasmania has v good 3g .. all CBD in Aus has 4g, and even NZ, has better 3g, over both islands than S.Africa.

To say S.A is far away, is, IMHO, a v poor excuse. NZ/Aus are even more remote, but, have (arguably) less corruption.

I am tired of waiting for Telkom. They have forced me to relocate business, and give jobs to an overseas workforce.

They shud hang their heads in collective shame, but, dont give a ****.
 
Oh, And one other thing.

Three (a cellular 3g provider), has a monthly cap, of 1 TB.

To hit it, u have to down-load vidoes from Youtube, something like, 12-14 hrs a day.

The service plan for that, is R300 a mth.
 
And just one more thing :

The service centres, dont totally rip u off, when they try and fix your hardware.

An Apple centre in SA, quoted me R18000 to fix an Imac, which cost £1400. UK cost to fix, £740.

It turns out, The SA centre, appears to have stole my RAM, and 'somehow' severed internal cables.

I am sick of just 'taking - it'

The world is in a down-turn, jobs/growth is the only way out.

Complacentcy, and just saying, This is Africa, isnt helping.

As someone already said, our internet speeds have improved from 192kbps to a minimum of 1mbps. We have four submarine cables landing in SA today and telcos digging up our roads and next to our national roads. We will get there.
And by this I'm not making excuses for our ineffective government, but thanks to the likes of Autopage who fought the ECN license issue in court, Mweb who introduced affordable quality uncapped, Cell C who reduced tariffs, etc we are moving in the right direction.

Source? I cannot find that anywhere on 3's site. What I can find is:

which is 15 GB a month, for £27.22 or £26.20. You get a choice of two netbooks (called laptops by 3) with the bundle, but both of them have a once off £69 pay in on top of the monthly bundle price.

That doesn't really sound better than my 8ta R200/10GB bundle.

Sorry, I don't trust your flippant facts, I was able to find the following coverage map for Hobart, Tasmania (expand for the whole island) which doesn't look like "v good" coverage to me:

plus speeds don't seem so different to SA in Devonport which I believe is a main pop centre in the north of Tasmania with ferry links to Melborne - possibly a cable landing point?:

My sister lives there... nothing spectacular on the BB front.

I have worked in Hobart on 3g, so, they are not flippant facts.

I will try find the Three link .. I head it on the (Tech it or Leave it) TIOLI podcast.

I dont wish this to become a slanging match, which doesnt help.

It has only a little to do with where we are located.

At one point we were better and ahead, technology, speeds and quality, when it came to cellular data. Anyway never is a very long time.

Depends on where you are in the UK. They too have a lot of ageing, decaying telecommunications infrastructure. You'll find many people complaining about unreliability, highly variable speeds and regular outages.

Everyone's further away from something. But the truth is that Australia's internet was long expensive and slow. It has improved, but they still have performance issues. Spend some time on their message boards and you'll see a steady stream of complaints exactly like those we see in South Africa.

OK, nuff said - but you originally did say Tasmania not Hobart :)

BTW check the speedtest.net figures you quoted - says they are better than 97% of Great Britain, wonder what SAs > 97% average speed is? Might not be too shabby.
 
I find these threads hilarious. In Hong Kong, Singapore, S Korea, Japan and throughout the rich areas of SE Asia you get 100MB for 200 rand or less, does that mean relative to these places people in the UK are getting badly ripped off?
