Internet speeds in the Uk

And the UK is pretty much the center of the world, whereas south africa, is effectively on an island, and the furthest point from anywhere with decent bandwidth.

Wish people will start to get it in their heads... we will NEVER be on the same playing field as the US/UK... Deal with it, get over it, migrate... These posts are so pointless, it's not even funny
 
How do you pay R2000 for 1.3 mb/s when my line which is 4 meg up to 10 megs is R554 including 20 gigs

@SAVAGE Did you ever ask yourself why UK is so well developed while (South) Africa is 'moer toe'. But never mind that. Let's look at Australia. Clearly it is even further away then SA yet the internet is ways better. Why? Of course people are entitled to compare internet to whichever country they want. After all internet is about a global village and not some isolated toilet in the bush. SA could have had cheap and fast internet too if it were not for idiots put in positions they do not belong. How sad that there are people out there still thinking the way you do.

As you can see not everything is hunky-dory in the UK, they have problems similar to us depending on where you are. The Isle of Wight is that large, well populated island off the south coast not one of the Outer Hebrides where you might expect problems.

BTW I wonder what the internet is like in Tasmania - anyone care to comment ?
 
I could not believe it when during my Eastern European tour I had lightning fast internet in my hotel room in . . . Romania. I mean WTF I thought SA is more advanced then that but obviously I was soooo wrong. And the worst part is, the world moves on while SA/Telkom smoke grass. I guess, by putting low IQ people in demanding positions all we get is either promises or corruption :D

Yep we know internet speeds over there are a lot faster and cheaper.. well known fact.

Fortunately though internet is everything to most people.

Ha Ha WTF did you smoke? When I first came to SA in '87, I was surprised to see how good the telephone network was. Saponet-p or something like that, comes to mind. I still remember I went like WOW, who said Africa is backwards. It won't surprise me if some place had a Telkom like at that time but not today anymore because the wires have been stolen and not replaced WTF.

Then it might surprise you to know that some of the very people that are retarding Telkom's current progress were the "high IQ" engineers back then. That the Dept of P&T had some bright folks is not disputed; they even developed some of the technology solutions in their own R&D labs. But to say that the current folks have "low IQ's" and are corrupt is an insult to many of the intelligent, hard-working folks there.

Then why is Australia on the same playing field in the middle of NOWHERE?

This country (RSA) has more than enough potential to be a first world country, unfortunately some factors are holding us back and I am not referring to our location...

most likely SA will only reach those speeds at affordable prices by let's say 2025, but we have seen significant upgrades at relatively affordable prices! We started with ADSL @ 192k, by the end of this year our lowest ADSL speed will be 1mb and to me, 1mb is good enough, obviously depending on your internet demands or expectations.

If you want to watch youtube videos and download a lot of files, you need a 4mb line, but I reckon when my line gets upgraded to 2mb I will be more than happy with my gaming experience, youtube videos and file downloading!

It would be nice to have a 50mb uncapped line, but hay, TIA!

We certainly have the potential to be classified as a developed country but yes, there are numerous factors that are obstacles to achieve this status. Our political stability, race tension, religious differences, energy supply etc. But we are classified as a dual economy and I'm hopeful that in the near future SA will achieve their MDG's and sort out any inequities and instability to become a developed country with all the beneficial attributes of a first world country!

In 20 years, we will post speedtest results of 100mb line speeds ;)

Wouldn't that be convenient hay ;).

Just imagine, we wouldn't need DSTV anymore. We will then be enabled to have cable TV! All broadcasting media will be done via the internet!

When I have children and tell them I use to game, browse and download on a 1mb line and they LOL @ me and they use 1gbs optic fibre!

At least we will be able to evaluate and observe the progress that has been made in the virtual world!
