Internet Usage Monitoring software

Hi Guys

I would like to get help on getting a software to monitor internet usage of computers and laptops on a network i want to know which host names or IP addresses visited which sites and when etc, i want to use it on about less than 10 computers preferably if the software can be free or open source it would be great.

that's exactly what I want to find out if users are downloading and browsing porn and movies using work Internet etc
 
I also need a solution for this.

Preferably something that runs on Mac (Yosemite)...

I have a Huawei E173 dongle running through a Zyxel Wifi router to serve 4 different devices and my data is evaporating. I need to find out which device is using it for what.

I've tried PeakHour 3, but it just sits and searches - cant find any devices on the network....

There is no way to do this with software running on a "client" machine.

The only time it can work as a software solution is if all other devices are using the device with the software as a gateway.

So you either need a full blown software based proxy running on a "server" like Untangled or Zentyal or Sophos UTM Home Edition or you need a hardware router device that supports the function like a Mikrotik or firmware flashed home router like mentioned above.

There is no easy nor genuinely free way to do it. Unless you have hardware already.

If I try Gargoyle and it doesn't work, could I have a problem getting the standard firmware back, or will it just not accept Gargoyle?
 
You have to make sure you have a compatible router. If you brick the router (even with a compatible one) you could end up with an expensive paperweight. I have used Gargoyle and Tomato and have found that as long as you use a compatible router and are careful it should not be a problem.

A TP-Link WDR3600 is only R790 at Takealot - that is what I would try. I would stick to the 1.6 (stable version) and avoid 1.7 for now.

Guess I'll just have to fork out then...

Would you suggest Gargoyle rather than Tomato?
 
I recently changed to Tomato (Shibby Fork), and prefer it to Gargoyle. The hardware investment however is expensive. I use the Asus RT-AC66U which is R 2735 at Esquire.

However Gargoyle is easier to setup and the hardware investment a lot less, so I would start there. I used it for 3 years on a Netgear WNDR3700v2 (still have it & keep it as a backup). The reporting for your purposes would be the same between the two.

The main reason I went for Tomato is that I can setup the Scheduler to automatically change the ISP to Webafrica between 12-6 and then back to Afrihost during the day.

Is it correct that the WDR3600 is NOT an ADSL modem?

If this doesn't solve my mobile broadband woes, then I'm giving up and going back to ADSL... I see no other option.

It would be nice not to buy a new router for nothing!
 
Spend some cash and get Kerio Control.

The free/open source things are ok but limited and really do not work as well as a real firewall.
You waste more time setting them up then fixing them and tweaking than it is worth (unless you have a very very basic network then try something like smoothwall).
 
Setup your current modem in bridge mode. Connect the ADSL modem to the WAN port on the WDR3600, and Gargoyle will handle the PPPoE connections.
