Hi, are there any software development companies in Cape Town that offer internships? I've been searching on the net, but I'm yet to find any.

Nobody really advertises internships as it attracts employment agencies. Best is to just send your CV out and mention thats what your looking for.

But be careful, some companies will take advantage of you and you will not learn anything.

Thanks for the advice. Back to Google for sifting and to get some email addresses.

Contact the School where you studied, the should have a department for that.. most compnays will approach the schools directly for interns

Look at Amazon Web Services. They have been recruiting recently and expanding their CT operations. Google them and look for the Capetown office.

If you are in UCT or Stellenbosch pm me. I can put you in contact with the right people. I have interned at a few companies already.

Am I the only one who reads that an internship costs R10000.dafuq

Yeah, so it appears. Although only if you decline their offer. Still very dodge in my opinion - every company I have ever worked for will not expect any reimbusement from interns (and they don't pay such a low "stipend"). If they are unable to convince a good intern to stay full time, they consider it their problem and don't make it the intern's problem.

Wouldn't you be willing to move to CT? I've heard good things about amazon SA.

Definitely a good career move without a doubt. I met some of the devs at the conference here in Durban. The stuff they do is amazing! It seemed they use a lot of scala for monitoring their instances and collecting/analysing data.

But, I love Durban and am pretty happy with my lifestyle here. Though, maybe I'd give it a try one day. Who knows...

I've heard only bad things.

Can you elaborate? I am basing a lot of my assessment on the fact that many of my linkedin contacts have gone there, and none have left, which isn't exactly comprehensive, just an indication.

I've schlepped all over the world for my career, for better or worse. I felt that if I didn't go for a great opportunity, I would regret it. I have definitely moved to places that I couldn't wait to leave, but found some great places to live too.

Sounds interesting. Mind giving a quick bio?

The quick version: Cape Town->USA (Silicon Valley)->London->USA. 4 jobs in 15 years.

PM me if there are any details you're intersted in.

It has been described as fine if you worship technology and your goal is to sacrifice your life to the company. I shouldn't say I've only heard bad things as I know one person who does like working there, but they fit the description of someone who lives for their job and technology.

I am told that part of the reason they always have so many jobs advertised is a very high churn rate.
