No, I had not considered that they lose staff due to getting more customers. There is no reason there'd be any direct link between the number of customers or deployed hardware and the number of programmers needed. According to those who have worked there they lose people who haven't been warned of the sort of environment they're getting themselves into. It's not that they don't pay for the time, but not everyone wants to spend every waking moment tinkering with technology and working long hours.
