Into Virgin Territory

We consider SA to be a very important market.
Read - We consider SA to be incompetently governed/regulated and therefore easily exploited.

Consumers will be disappointed to hear that Virgin Mobile has no intention of engaging in a price war with the incumbent operators. However, Sacranie promises that its prices will be “competitive” and that service levels will be the best in the industry.

i'd switch if the price is the same and service is better.

That is a true but sad statement....as i'm sure many would agree with you
but what it's telling me is that you (one) are willing to accept high prices

A 450 man crew to handle the whole of za?
That is quite a small amount of people to handle corporate and public customers. Never mind a retail outlet an the actual management of the south african division.

The man has made it crystal clear that there will be no competition through prices but rather through service excellence.

At this point in time south africa does need the service excellence but honestly what we need on all fronts is a more competitive industry.

We consider SA to be a very important market.

That statement sums up the whole industry.
We are an emerging market with quite a good stable economy but due to the regulatory enviroment which has unfortunately become a bureacratic wetdream, we are now sitting with the fact that if you can get in here. You can and most likely will be able to rape the ppl for all their money.

through service excellence = more value added.

More of the same going nowhere.

Price Price and Price AGAIN! The customer service can come later.

First of all
Let us welcome exotic Virgin Mobile to SA telecoms industry, Foreign investment, job creations, impetus of competition are appreciated

The big question is that

Whether Virgin has the experience or ability to deliver customer satisfactions ?

Well, early indications are that, Virgin intends to offer MV (More Value ?)

But the consumers may not be satisfied - there seems to be no shortage of this service in the industry, one feels no Big Joy about it.

The consumer will only be really happy if Virgin offers something "lower and lower " start with P.................

PRICEWAR , What ?...............:D

The way I see it, I only phone the customer call centre of my SP maybe once or twice a year (and maybe more often if I have a problem), but I have to sweat blood to pay my phone bill evry month. Which do you think is more important to me..... !?!?!

I'm sorry but I still think that the SA public should boycott Virgin, if all they are bringing to the party is 'better service'. Money talks! and always will. This is afterall a developing country and people are not cash flush as in Europe and America.

lol everyone cries for a more customer centric approach from telkom but when Virgin SA promises it, it's the last thing you want...

Yeah price deductions are important too, but let's be honest, that's never gonna happen

First and foremost everyone cries for lower prices from telkom - telkom is the one who claims to want to be more 'customer centric'.

We're paying some of the highest costs in the world - why wouldnt we want lower prices??

As ofcourse i and 45 million other south africans agree with you, telecom prices in south africa will probably not be 'affordable' for a very long time.

I have read many articles on this site regarding Papi's promise to create a more 'customer-centric' company, but nothing ever seems to happen. People are getting angry with telkom's lack of customer-centricity, and are demanding them to recognize consumer's, such as recocnizing a broadband activist site such as Myadsl.co.za. that's why i find a statement like this a bit ironic:

Not trying to start a flamin war but i think we should start grabbing whatever we can get.. To actually expect some kind of price decreases is some sick dream, sad but true :(

I reckon we continue moaning about the prices until either GOVT/ICASA/TELKOM or the competition hear and listen to us. I wouldn't just accept it as a given fact that it will never happen. It HAS to happen if government is pushing for their 6% economic growth rate and Papi setting his target of 1 million ADSL lines installed, broadband penetration etc etc.

I agree with Inertia,
Stop complaining about this and that and allow Virgin to bring to the table what they have. They are after all one of the biggest brands in the world (regardless of pricing). They will not be able to go much lower on pricing as CellC owns the network.
Using Government to lower pricing is the wrong way to go. Virgin would not have invested in SA if Telco pricing was forced by the Government.
The only real and lasting way to bring down pricing is competition and then also loosely regulated competition. Virgin does bring that to the table.
The same goes for Telkom. Stop trying to force pricing on them from a government point of view and just allow VAN's to supply their own network.
If someone is to blame for the high pricing it should be the SNO and whoever is driving them. They are the ones who are not bringing anything to the table. Telkom is just paying its cards on that.
So sot whining about pricing and embrace anyone that brings much needed competition to the country.
I for one will switch in an instant when Virgin starts operating and my Cellphone bill is between R1200 to R1900 per month. They will probably not lower it for my, but when Vodacom starts losing >10000 people like my they will either up the service (not going to happen) or lower the call rates. This is how a price war is started, not by government or whatnot.

Jip! Deducted into the pockets of the share holder...

Message to Virgin: Lower the price, and see how fast you get customers! Here in SA we're used to crap service anyway... :(

We already have 3 providers promisig better services. We dont need a fouth. What we need is lower prices. But you all know this song and dance by now

Communications is suppose to be a basic service which everyone should have cheap access to - just like bread and clothing. If you want to pay more for value or service feel free to support a provider which does so (maybe Virgin?!), but as for most South Africans WE want CHEAP communications like the rest of the world!

Cell C already has lower prices, Its just number portability thats an issue. Once thats in place I expect some REAL changes...

To be honest i'm actually dreading number portability. I can jsut see the sanctions that will be placed on customers by their networks, ie. pay all the remaining months of the contract in full + R2000 penalty costs etc.

I can tell you that none of the networks will be quick to let their hard-earnded customers switch easily.
