Hey guys!

So many of you know me from what is now the iPhone section :D

My old man recently bought a Canon 5D MkII and some really awesome new lenses to go with it, which I will be using most of the time! :)

- Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 EF L II USM Wide Angle
- Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 L IS USM Macro
- Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II USM Tele

We had a 7D before that (actually we still have it, will probably sell it if anyone is interested).

I've always been interested in photography, and a the risk of sounding vain, I always thought I had somewhat of an "eye" for photography. It's only after this 5D that I have really started to become interested in it!

I will upload some of my first snaps I took with the 5D for you guys to look at and give your opinions, or just for you guys to look at :)

Thought I would intro myself as I will probably be spending quite a bit of time in this section now, with some noob questions too :p

The beginners tutorials posted in the one sticky are very useful though, still reading through them!

See you guys around!

A word of caution. The 5DmkII is an upgrade to the 7D in only one area - the sensor. In everything else, it's a downgrade. Spend the time to get to know the 5D and it's limitations before you get rid of the 7D.

Thanks I will do so. First thing that was obvious was the lack of built in flash, and a repositioned buttons (prefer the 7D power button position). Those are minor things though. No other major differences were obvious to me, guess I'll have to read up a bit more.

EDIT: ok seems the shooting fps and focus points are superior on the 7D

Some very nice gear there - enjoy it! :)

I'd consider keeping the 7D - they're two significantly different cameras. Crop factor hasn't been mentioned so remember that 100mm lens on the 5DMk2 is the equivalent of having a 160mm on the 7D.

Nice kit!

I've got the 7D and the 70-200 listed above - and love it! I think that lens is on my camera 90% of the time ...

When I got my 7D and learned by aunt had a 5DMKII and was curious to the features. I guess it all depends on what you're shooting, but personally I'd still chose the 7D over the 5DMKII due to the speed and features.

Like koffie said - I'd probably the keep the 7D for other situations where it may be better suited

Thanks :) I heard about the 1.6x factor on the 7D. Pretty interesting!

Thanks :) Very nice lens indeed! I've done some reading up just now too, and it does depend on what you're shooting. Guess it's best to have both :p But will see as there will probably be a 5D MkIII out soon enough, and then it will probably be wiser selling the 7D and MkII to get that. But i'm thinking too far forward, let me enjoy the kit for now!

I've been doing some reading and the 7D seems better suited for fast paced shooting such as live sports etc. due to the higher FPS etc. Also has more focus points and a cool digital level feature which is nice to have but if you have a good eye I would have thought that's good enough :p

Look forward to spending some time here and sharing some snaps!

There's more to the focus system than the number of focus points. The 7D have five different possible groupings, it has spot focus, it allows you to configure different focus modes and focus point selections for different orientation, i.e. in landscape mode it's one setting and in portrait mode it's another, and it flips back and forth automatically. When shooting live music or events, this saves me a *lot* of time.

There are more advantages. The built-in flash can command external flashes - that's pretty useful!

Awesome thanks :) I guess these features will come in the MkIII since the 7D is newer than the MkII.

7D is a very nice all rounder camera it seems! I must say quality on the 5D is noticeably better though and so it should be.

First thing that was obvious was the lack of built in flash

Since the 5D is a proper pro camera, I'm sure most people who have it wouldn't consider a built in flash a drawback, as most wouldn't use it. Even if you were using it to trigger off-camera flash, like in the 60D/7D, most people still use proper triggers for the reliability and distance.

Of course the design of the 5D might preclude it's inclusion but I think any pro would welcome a pop-up flash since having one makes a lot more sense than not.

BTW the 5DMk2 is considered by most to be a prosumer/semi-professional body, same as the 7D.

Lack of pop-up flash is the the second reason why I didn't buy a 5DmkII

I get that having one is more useful than not having one :) I'm just saying that Canon probably looked at the probability that most wouldn't use it.

@koffie- what was the first, full frame sensor?

I didn't suggest I had only two

f/8 AF and sensor size - what else?
I'm not actually too bothered about the AF - it won't effect me even with the 2x converter. My biggest gripe is the FF sensor - even the 1.3 crop on my 1Dmk3 makes a difference. The removal of the SD slot bugs me for one simple reason - I love my eye-fi cards. I know, it doesn't make sense and the benefit of 2x CF are huge but there you go.

Then there is the cost of it. I've got to scrape up another $1800 for a whole lot of stuff I don't want/need? What are my options? They're discontinuing the 1DMk4 and the 7D isn't up to the task.
