Inverex Inverters

I use the Inverex 500. Works absolutely fine. Comes with an inbuilt battery charger. Might be cheaper to get one from overseas. This site is selling them for 60 USDs.
 
can one get inverters powerful enough to sustain an entire household?

The Inverex 2000 has an output of about 1200 watts which is not very much. I think that they will be only useful for appliances with relatively small power usages. Forget about geysers, heaters etc. It could be done though if you have the dosh. I would say that a generator would be the best bet for an entire household.

Trying to avoid the whole generator deal, the noise and the smell of it doesn't appeal but yeah it's going to cost a small fortune buying enough inverters to do the equivalent job...

Our blackouts are about two hours, so if you utilize the 5k inverter on smaller alliances. Leave the geyser Power the essentials

The inverter kicks in when the power fails so its load should not be permanent. The batteries should last about 4 years 5 max. The bypass switch is for maintenance (Battery replacements).

The bottom line is that if you want to power your geyser and stove in the four hour outage then an inverter or UPS solution will not do. You would need a generator or solar solution and both would end up costing you an arm and a leg.

With a bit of energy savvy, you could get yourself a relatively inexpensive solution that would allow you to carry on with at least some sort of semblence to your life.

My ALT 3000-6 (www.altpower.co.za) is wired into my DB (the electrician was arranged by ALT POWER) with power supplied to all my plug and light points. The system allows for a 30min double load surge (i.e. 6000W) which allows me the opportunity to quickly go and switch off my tumbledryer, heaters, kettle or what ever other large consumer happens to be on when the power goes down.

My TV's, PC's, Fridges, Lights, Garge Door and other necessaties all still have power which I think is a million times better than the alternative of nothing at all.

As a bonus, my wifes hairdryer happens to only require 1900W (something which the ALT POWER consultant checked and told my wife. Which I think is a deliberate selling technique... One morning of wet hair and my wife made it clear!), which means that my wife can dry her hair in the morning (provided that nothing else is on at the same time :D ).

My iron also only requires 1200W which means the ironing gets done.

I was not looking to run my geyser, stove or kettle. All I wanted was to watch the Super 14 and ended up with something far better. Why not give ALT POWER a try? I was really impressed with their service and can recommend them to anyone.

Errr excuse me but normally if you includer a solar (PV) solution you would need an inverter of sorts, a thermal geyser (Solar) would have little bearing on load shedding (especially when it dark :p )

I agree that powering anything with a high load is conterproductive (read very expensive). However running essential loads (lights/security/freezer) can be accomplished without encurring major costs (unless of course you have the correct sort of appliances ;) )
 
Just a note Inverex units supply square wave instead of sine wave and so do some these other *cheaper* units, so be careful what you power with them, APC units supply sine wave tho so if you NEED sine wave then best get a proper UPS.

As for the whole house thing, you can definitely power an entire house from it depending on the unit, the higher power APC units can accommodate battery array's as well as huge supplies although they are out of reach for just about every home user.

I think Honda power generators are generally the best bet, they win quite a few awards and reviews all say they provide very stable power.

Yamaha also supply Inverter based generators (pure sine wave), Honda's is the EUxxxxi range, and yamaha is the EFXXXXi(S) range.

There is a company locally that does those chinese (Winstream) UPS/inverters up to 8KVA (Sine wave).

Unfortunately the current power crisis has brought quite a few worms to the surface ;)
 
I have seen the difference in pure vs modified.

I have tested a few units on plasma screens, and crt tvs, the inverex units seem to give the best quality modified sine wave, almost no distortion on tvs. and the plasma screens. Seems to be used a lot for computer backups.

I am using a INVEREX on a uncompressed STL repeater link and it has given no problems with all these blackouts, or on the equipment itself.

I am an Inverex user. This is my view on it.

At the begining, it was wonderful... You dare to forget the high price you paid for it....

Then, the first problem encountered is that, when the power goes out, it doesn't remain on.... It goes out then turn itself on. So I was forced to add an AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator). Just to make sure that any fluctuation won't turn the computer off, it's not good on the hard drives.

The aggravating problem is that it doesn't even last an hour! For the moment, only my IMac 24" is connected to it.

I own an Inverex 1000.
I live in Kinshasa, DRC where power outage is a normal part of our life... continous power two days in row without a stop is a dream. Some of us even spent weeks or months without it.

I have to agree with you there Kira,
They were good at first, but most of mine now are restarting when the powere goes out and then they are useless as the pc/server goes down anyway.
The battery life is still pretty good on them though, at least 2 1/2 hours.

I have a client who has one on every pc in his office and those last them for roughly 4-5 hours at a go.
 
I bought a 3500 in January and it's worked flawlessly since then. Just a week ago we had 5 off-ons in the space of 2 minutes, and all worked well - power to server, 3 workstations, DSL router and hub without a hiccough.
