Hi All

I just purchased 2 x PSS XT24 Inverter/Battery combo's (2400Va/1440W Modified Sine Wave, 2 x 104a Batteries 12v, charge current 20A)
http://pss.co.za/index.php/products?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.pbv.v1.tpl&product_id=60&category_id=4

The Fan is so loud I Cant even hear myself think. So I am returning them
They then suggested I go Sine wave SH-1500
http://pss.co.za/index.php/products?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.pbv.v1.tpl&product_id=18&category_id=4

I need to covered for less than 3-4h for each area
Area1

• 1x HDDSTV (HD PVR 2P) 100-200V 1A
• PVRI (Old DVR3000)
• Samsung LCD TV (LA40B550) 180W
• RaspberryPI 2 5V 2A

Area2

• Samsung TV (LA32C530) 120W
• PC (Low Power consumption)
o 750W PSU
o 1x HDD
• Wireless AP 9V 1A

• NVR (HIKVision DS-7616NI-E2 8P) without HDD < 10W
• HDD 4.4W

I see the current one I have is 2400Va and the new one they are suggesting is 1500Va

I would really appreciate the assistance and if anyone that has used the pss products to give me some feedback

What did you pay if you don't mind my asking.

My advice would depend on that tbh.

fabzster your needs are about the same as mine.
The SD-PVR uses 24 watts so I'm sure the HD-PVR would be about the same.
LCD TV's draw about twice that of a LED TV, my 55" LED Smart TV draws 80 watts.
Not sure what a Rasberry is but if it's audio then just for the load shedding time use the TV.
For that lot you need 230 watts.

With your second setup, well my PC iCore7 + Geforce etc + Genius sound system all drasw 120 watts.
So with the TV here you need 240 watts.

That makes say 500 watts with a few lights etc.
I recommend a 1000 watt ECCO Pure Sine Wave Inverter from SA Energy Group for R2750 and the fan won't drive you nuts.

2 x 102 A/H Batteries will do you about 2 hours so I suggest 4 batteries.
Silver Calsium batteries are R1350 and Gel Batteries are R1800

Ah ok, now I understand.

That said, two batteries cost R1800 ea...

Not sure how much it is worth to you saving R1500...

If I decided to by the Axpert 5Kva what batteries and how many do you think I would need for both areas mentioned in my first post:

I need to covered for less than 3-4h for each area
Area1

• 1x HDDSTV (HD PVR 2P) 100-200V 1A
• PVRI (Old DVR3000)
• Samsung LCD TV (LA40B550) 180W
• RaspberryPI 2 5V 2A

Area2

• Samsung TV (LA32C530) 120W
• PC (Low Power consumption)
o 750W PSU
o 1x HDD
• Wireless AP 9V 1A
• 20inch LCD Monitor (B2030) 100-240v 0.5A 45W
• NVR (HIKVision DS-7616NI-E2 8P) without HDD < 10W

Honestly, the Axpert 5kVA is complete overkill for what you have there.

I mean it is your money, but the 3kVA model is more than enough for your setup.

Regardless of which model you buy, just get 4x First National Battery FMF102.
They are sold under the brand Excis and sometimes without the Excis label. The model number FMF102 is what you want however.

I picked up two this week for ±R1650ea from Battery Center in Woodstock (Cpt). They aren't going to last 10 years but for the price you get good value for money. Be careful tho, those batteries go anywhere from R1600 up to R2800 (Builders Warehouse). I called two Battery Centers (CBD and Woodstock). CBD was R2100 each. So the price differs a lot. NOTE: The batteries weigh 26kg each.

For the Axpert 5kVA model all 4 batteries should be connected in series. You will have 102Ah at 48volts.
For the Axpert 3kVA model 2 batteries should be connected in series. Do the same for the other two. Then parallel the two sets. You will have 204Ah at 24volts.

The 4 batteries give you plenty of run-time without too much drain and you have flexibility (12v, 24v or 48v are all options).

Connect them using 25mm or 50mm cable. 50mm if you can afford it. Remember, if a cable says it can do 100amps doesn't mean you WANT to run it at 100amps because the cable gets hot and there are plenty of loss there.
Either cable can be had at Belco Electrical (Voltex) in Woodstock (50mm was ±R70 a meter). They also sell the crimps that fit on the Excis batteries (±R7 each). Make sure to get the right size (for the Excis battery lug and wire size).

Get a fuse for the batteries from ACDC in Milnerton (size of fuse in Axpert manual).

I bought myself 4 battery containers from Makro for R150 each (You can skip, just don't let metal things near battery terminals, bridge terminals = massive power from battery, sparks, instant metal weld, etc.)

To integrate into your DB board, you will need a few more things, but then you should probably get someone to do it instead...

Many, many thanks that is awesome info (especially the pricing and locations)!!!!!!!!

is this the battery box:
https://www.makro.co.za/diy/pioneer-battery-box-2700750EA

I can also get the following batteries(Not sure if they are good):
E102 Energizer 12 Volt * 102AH Battery R1875.00
Royal 12 Volt * 102AH battery R1859.00

If I go 5kva with 4 x 102ah batteries will I be able to run all three areas for 3-4 hours without going below 50%?
also what time do you think it will take to charge 50%. and will there be any room for growth should I need more?

Area1

· 1x HDDSTV (HD PVR 2P) 100-200V 1A
· PVRI (Old DVR3000)
· Samsung LCD TV (LA40B550) 180W
· RaspberryPI 2 5V 2A

Area2

· Samsung TV (LA32C530) 120W

Area3

· 3x Dell (U2412M) 1.5A (max);38W (typical);72w(max)
· PC (Higher Consumption)
o 750W PSU
o 3 x HDD 1 x SSD
o 2 x Nvidia GTX670 170W (max)

No problem. I spent a lot of time during this project just phoning places, doing research on what to buy, etc.

Consider yourself lucky that you are saving a lot of time :p (but the research part can be fun)

No, they had those also, but the ones I bought are cheaper and better quality :p (or were)

But I bought up all the stock (was in Montague Gardens)

iI can also get the following batteries(Not sure if they are good):
E102 Energizer 12 Volt * 102AH Battery R1875.00
Royal 12 Volt * 102AH battery R1859.00

Ok so, both those batteries are actually relabelled batteries from First National Battery :p

Both look the same as the FMF102, so probably it is the same battery under different labels.

First National Battery sells *most* batteries in SA. Since SA has the minerals locally, they are made here which is why they are so cheap compared to batteries from other countries. The quality is also pretty good, so I'm not convinced shelling out twice the price for an imported battery is worth it.

To justify it, you need to have twice the life and I really doubt that will be the case.

My FMF102 say that they should not be discharged more than 80% and typical should be 50%

If I go 5kva with 4 x 102ah batteries will I be able to run all three areas for 3-4 hours without going below 50%?

Honestly, you are posting specs but they don't say how much power these things *actually* use.

But computers, TVs and such generally use very little power.

For example, I was running a NAS (9 HDs, serious server hardware), ADSL router, Wifi router, mini-server (running PFSense), PC, Plasma TV (serious power draw), 5.1 Onkyo receiver with 5 Jamo speakers + powered Jamo sub-woofer, Intel NUC (multimedia PC) and house lights (400w worth of lights) all on a 1000watt inverter and it was hitting ~700watt with EVERYTHING turned on.

The max power draw is far from what your typical draw will be.

Things that really tax you will be: Kettle, Geyser, Microwave, Oven, Heater, Vacuum cleaner. Lights can be heavy users also.

In my opinion, I doubt all that stuff you posted will come close to 1000watt draw typical, but I can't say for sure.

You need to buy a plug to measure the watt draw and sum it all up.

Gnome, you were pretty much spot on :)

I used My Killa Watt to get some wattage usage:

So Far

Lounge 260W
Bedroom 200W
Study 250W(Idle) 520W(Max Load) (This is my gaming rig so sucks power when gaming Full with SLI

So If I aim around 980 Watts that should be the max total of those 3 area's.

What formula do I use to calculate for Batteries using the 5Kva (runtime and %DOD)

I was thinking then I can add the fridge and some of the LED lighting in the house?

My dad is an electrician and he will be moving to Cape Town this weekend so he could help me split the circuits that need to be run on the inverter and change some plugs to dedicated plugs, that should be no problem

But with regards to the inverter setup I am sure he hasn't done anything like that so may need some advice there;
