I have a strong feeling this article was paraphrased from 9to5mac's clickbait title, yes these phones aren't getting new version releases but they aren't dropped, they'll still continue to receive security updates as have iOS 12 to this day, so unless you're upgrading to replace rotting hardware they'll still be absolutely fine ideally to use for another year or so first and third-party-wise. (Thanks for the headsup @Johnatan56!)

E.g. Netflix is only iOS 13 and up (unless you still have the old app installed, or have previously installed it as you can still get it from purchased items).
I do think Netflix will probably drop iOS 13 sooner rather than later due to iOS 14 adding AV1 decode support (iOS 14 has same support as iOS 13, so should be fine).

(Just a comment in regards to third party support)

Didn't even read the article
I'm an Apple fanatic, or should I say I was...

BUT

No longer, Apple is just money money money money, etc, my iPhone 5s decided after 2 yrs to switch off (just like that after I read a WhatsApp message from a friend), my iPhone 6 last week after 2yrs decided that the touchscreen all of a sudden will be random and unresponsive. I am super careful of phones and have never ever abused them nor dropped them. Now I cannot even 'Log On' into my phone. It's a friggen brick.

Apple knows they play dirty, just last week they were given a hefty fine of $113 000 000, I feel this fine is nothing compared to what they make. Steve Jobs is looking down and spitting on Apple

iPhone 6 stopped being manufactured in 2016? That has to be 3/4 years old.

That said, Apple's iPhones are generally actually pretty well built, it's the Macs/Macbooks that seem to have some fatal flaw every year (and the latest one has had the same flaw for years now with the high voltage line for the display running next to the CPU).
You bought a new iPhone 6 in 2018? Why?
I wrote a longer post, stop ninja'ing me. :p

yeah, I'd never touch their desktop machines but my 1st Gen SE is still going great after 4 years, especially with a battery change. I was sceptical for every new iOS release on this device following my bad experience with the iPhone 4 but they've completely turned around from outright gimping these things for sure. That said, I've heard horror stories from others on the whole range of phones too so while not perfect, it's more or less solid

These devices not getting the next OS was expected.

I'm not convinced they had a policy of slowing down old phones to get people to upgrade. Overall though the hardware itself seems to last.

They did and admitted it. Their excuse was the apps were getting power hungry and they were concerned about battery life.
Yeah right !!!

These phones were released in 2014 and 2016, I don't think its not unreasonable that development and support for this old hardware is ended. With the speed of tech improvement those devices are obsolete now.

With that said though not taking anything away from the fact that the price of replacement devices is a joke, and that consumers are being fleeced horribly for a new device. This goes for both apple and samsung now.

Can you point to a quote from Apple where they stated they slowed phones down to force people to upgrade? Otherwise they've never admitted to doing so and have never been proven to be doing so. I am not aware that the court ruled they had either.

Also for a company that engages in deliberately slowing down devices they've exhibited some really strange behaviour. What would possess them to release a new OS version that made the iPhone 6 usable again? Or when they did the same with the iPhone 4?
