Am I missing something or has the ability to reduce the size of an image before uploading been removed?

Yeah, stopped using Photobucket because of it. It automatically resizes now. I wanted the option for full resolution but it is preset now to save a lower resolution of which parameters I am yet to ascertain.

Moved to imgur and am generally happy with the product but the web browser version only. They also have an iOS app but it's not very polished and I'm not sure there is an option to set resolutions there either. In fact it's crap...

See that's the thing - I'd rather it be resized before uploading instead of first uploading a 2mb+ image.

Guess it's time to start hunting for an alternative.

Indeed.

As I say Imgur sign up process is simple and their website is incredibly easy to use with minimal settings and bling but the option to choose between a number of upload resolutions.

Now if it applies those same settings to the account when logged in on a pad/iPhone then you're in business.

Actually I tested it now on the phone and it does resize..

The original of this photo is 2.1mb, the imgur version uploaded via iPhone is 424KB

EDIT: Killing that pic, too big...

Mmmmm, not sure now. It's doing something!! The original is 2.11mb, the Imgur version is 424KB!!

Thanks for giving me something new to obsess about this morning bwana!!! :o :p

EDIT: The "resized" image is 2448x3264, 96dpi with a 24 bit depth and is 423KB in size

The "original" image is 2448x3264, 72dpi with a 24 bit depth and is 2.11mb in size.

Opening the images up side by side on my pc there is no discernible difference in quality between the 2!!!

Without having access to the original I can only assume they're heavily compressing the image. With some images it's quite possible you won't not notice any difference, on others you will.

BTW - I just had a look at the above image and it's also 72.

Ja, serious compression going on which is par for the course but how does an image a fifth of the size of the original look so good?

EDIT: I'll try upload the original but I think, myBB also compresses attached images.

Ja, 656KB.

Yeah, feel free to kill that oversized image too. :)

BTW - comparing the two images you uploaded you can see the compression artefacting is more pronounced in the first image.

Uh, okay. To the untrained eye they look the same. Thought it might be too good to be true. Will kill that image shortly.

Here's a little demonstration taken from this image. (uploaded as a full quality jpg)

max-quality.jpg

What I've done is selected a small area of the photo and saved it as full (low compression), 50%, and 10% (very high compression) versions and then done a screen capture of them - with luck the forum software won't degrade the images too much…

Now keep you're eye on the ball :)
Full:
Screen Shot 2013-04-24 at 2013•04•24 11.12.34 .jpg

50%
Screen Shot 2013-04-24 at 2013•04•24 11.12.44 .jpg

10%
Screen Shot 2013-04-24 at 2013•04•24 11.12.50 .jpg

And here's the same full size image again at the very high compression setting. The artefacting should be self evident?

Yeah, very noticeable degradation.

EDIT: Opening my own image in PS and magniyfying to 500% I can see what you talking about but the same image in Windows Viewer and I battled to see much of a difference.

Anyway we digress...

Have you opened an Imgur account yet? :)

Interesting.

The degradation is slight, a quick look at the picture won't reveal it at all, yet a detailed examination do.

Interesting.

So, which hosting site is good for photo storage at the end of the day?
It depends on what you need out of it. For general use there's Dropbox, flickr, picasa, google +… all great for full size images.

But I want one, primarily for forum use, that lets me resize the image before I upload (otherwise I'm wasting bandwidth uploading 2mb+ images) and also generates forum IMG tag links - Photoshelter used to do it. :o

Okay, but by resize what are we talking about?
Doesn't seem like Imgur actually reduces the size of the image, just compresses it, unless of course you use the web version where this is achievable...

Wait a second.

This works well.

Navigate to Imgur website on your iPad. Create a homescreen bookmark, log in using your newly created account and Bobs your auntie, web version on your iPad including custom resolutions...

I uploaded this image to photo shelter last week, the app automatically resized it before it left my phone.

If I do the same today I get this

The resized image was more than adequate for my needs and it saved me bandwidth.
