Hi guys,

So I've searched the forums and didn't quite get the info I was looking for.
Also, most of them are around 2 years old.

I'm looking for a system to beef up my home security.
These are my requirements:

  • IP cameras
  • At least 600k (720p would be nice)
  • PoE so that only one cable run is required
  • 2 way audio optional
  • 3 indoor cameras - no outdoor cams required
  • IR range about 8-10m
  • NVR - not sure if these buggers come with PoE natively?? I'd also like the ability to view live feeds remotely. Any chance that these things can write the recordings to a remote location?
  • Pan/tilt optional
  • Discreet - this is a must

My budget is around R6000 including installation (I'm sure as hell not going into my ceiling again!) - not sure if this is unrealistic... This is really new territory for me.

Thanks in advance...

What about battery operated, wifi enabled and HD? Feasible? Available? I hate unnecessary wires, but would love an entirely wireless IP security setup...

OK...

POE still needs you to have a plug point close to the camera - rather look at POE switches for powering your cameras. The switches are neater, and you don't have to worry about plug points. Once you subtract the POE injectors from the system, and add the switches, the cost is probably the same. NVR's don't provide POE.

If you drop me a PM with the exact number of cameras, I can suggest something for you to look at.

Not bothered about mobility - these cameras will be fixed.
Wifi has too many variables which would affect the feed quality due to signal issues.
However, if they have both 10/100/1000 and wifi, I won't complain :)

Ok, check with the PoE switches - gotya. I knew this was a requirement, as injectors are quite pointless when you have something PoE capable. Sending you a PM now...

Have a look at Scoop and Uniterm. Both have decent IP camera's and can sent you information on them.

Uniterm has a Mybb account that you can buy on. I think you will need to open a scoop account to buy from them, but its not a big deal.

Thanks, but I'd like to get something which is supplied and installed.

I get my IP cameras from http://www.cctv-cameras.co.za.
They are about the cheapest I've come across for what I'm after. I'm only looking at outdoor at the moment but I see they've got a couple of indoor ones. Not sure about the audio side, that hasn't been a requirement that I've hit yet- I'm helping people with outdoor security.

In my opinion, if you can go wired, always go wired.

POE switch is a thing of beauty - I have an 8-port Gigabit switch that delivers POE on all ports. Fantastic. Currently driving two of my cameras. If the cameras aren't POE capable, you can get a splitter from trendnet for a few hundred bucks. It does add to the bulk of the setup on the camera end but you could keep that part in the roof. An unexpected bonus is if you have to hard-reboot the cam, you can just unplug it at the switch-end. Voila.

NVR - that's another story. I see they start at around 7K on the above site but I've never investigated them because I run zoneminder on my home-automation linux server and that does all my monitoring, alarms etc.

Where are you based?

cheers
James

Howzit James.

Thanks for the tip. I did come across their website upon my intensive research (aka Googling) and their prices don't look too bad.
I guess audio isn't really a biggie, and it does seem to considerably push up costs due to more cabling.

I'm just after basic monitoring for security.
I had no idea that NVRs could hurt your pocket so badly.
In any case, if its an IP cam I could just record to my PC...

Thing is, I was robbed - who's to say (god forbid) next time they don't take the other PC with all the evidence!
That's my only worry.
At the moment I'm just exploring the idea based HUGELY on cost.

I'm based in Randburg.

If you are buying from http://www.cctv-cameras.co.za I would strongly recommend you consider their Dahua cams (which come with a free 16ch software package) as they offer superb low light performance, are well priced and are well represented locally.

The 4/8/16CH Dahua NVR's also come with built-in 4 port POE as well if i'm not mistaken.

You could also try contacting Regal Security and getting pricing from them as they are major agents for Dahua locally.

EDIT: Forgot to add:

For 6k installed, the only thing IP about the system will be the network interface on the DVR.
Adding 2 way audio to the cams will easily double the price as the feature is usually accompanied by a host of alarm I/O ports, SD storage etc.

P.S. I have an IR Dahua 1.3MP dome I need to get rid of if you're interested ;)

Not at all, they definitely do the brand. Either through their regal branches or through their IP division, IPSS.

Why do IP Cameras all have such low resolution? Isn't there anything HDish available?

True HD IP Camera's are not going to be cheaper in any way shape or form. (R10k plus per camera)

@OP.. Any update on your camera system setup and the costs? I'm also been looking into a cctv setup for home.

The cameras I use all have Megapixel resolutions. Anyone that needs cameras & monitoring software, just drop me a PM with what they're looking for.

I enjoyed reading through this, there were some comments which helped me with my own system

Sorry bud.... I've decided to put this on the back burner.
Too much other ****e on my plate. Just got a flat tyre this morning - 245 R18. Think you know what I mean.
