Hi all,

I'm quite new to the whole ip camera thing and don't really know too much as to where to start, i'm hoping to setup just a few camera's and want to be able to have live access to them remotely, while also having access to x amount of recorded footage. Can anyone point me to a thread with some relevant info for me? My searching was unfortunately not very fruitful.

Thanks in advance, cheers.

Can't point to a thread, but I have had much happiness with my current setup:
3 Axis cameras, with motion detection set up on the cameras.
When motion is detected, the data is uploaded to a Synology NAS (jpegs, with filenames based on date / time).
The NAS also manages the VPN remote access.
I used to have a linux box instead of the NAS - it would also convert the images to video every night, but found that to be unnecessary. I suspect a raspberry pi may be able to do that job if you need videos.

Just one thing from my side about setting up IP Security Cameras. Change the default login. Because really what is the point of having security cameras when the criminals can simply log in and see. "Oh nice during 1pm to 2pm there is only an old lady on FB at the office" <-- I have seen this!

Everyone out there that can read! CHANGE YOUR DEFAULT PASSWORDS ON EVERYTHING CONNECTED ON A NETWORK!!!

With some cameras, you can record onto microSD card right into the camera. Supports up to 32GB depending on the camera. So if you not recording a lot, you can just use the built-in recording so its one less hardware device to worry about.

Since there is no thread per say, please just ask any questions here so this can be the de-facto IP camera thread :D

There are a couple of suppliers of cameras here including myself which can assist with the information.

Thanks for all the feedback and input guys, what do you think it would cost to setup about 4 low end cameras that record onto a hard drive and are accessible via a web interface? Just a rough estimate will do, i'm looking for a starting point.

Axis cameras are 5-10K per camera (or more!) depending on how fancy you want to go (Pan-Tilt-Zoom / night vision etc). Upside is that they work very well with most software (e.g. zoneminder if you are so inclined).
Synology NAS is about R5K for the box, excluding the 4 drives you will put in. On the upside, you then have a NAS / central media storage unit / VPN server / backup server / mail server / P2P download client / personal cloud server / all round awesome toy to play with. The NAS also has an IP camera monitoring option, but that will cost extra (I don't see the need for that anyway)

Setting up the whole system is pretty painless. Everything is well documented and works as it says on the box.

What about the Ubiquity airVision range?

Have been reading up about them, but does anyone have some experience with them? Maybe even a screenshot of what the cameras can do?

Thanks

For better answerage, and this goes to from where and whom you may be supplied, what area are you in?

Pics with my posts on this page should give you the screenshot answers; what else do you want to know?

Great thanks. Sums it up...poor quality night vision without compatibility with other software vendors but still rtps capable.

The app compatibility thing is more annoying than a real problem (even with Milestone) and, without external light the night picture is t3h 5uxx0r. And my other real gripe, and the one that cost money to get around,, is the BLOODY non-standard 24Vdc PoE they do. But, that said, they were a breeze to get going on 'droid and always work all there.
