IP to Country

So i'm busy looking for a database to do IP to Country conversions. There's quite a few to choose from. But the 3 or 4 I did try didn't have IS or ADSL IP ranges for South Africa in them.

This makes me highly doubt the accuracy of these. There's even an API available (http://api.hostip.info/country.php?ip=41.243.224.9) and yields xx (unknown) for the IP address specified.

Makes it easy to use because you wouldn't need to update the database yourself and can do a quick AJAX query to there, but still, inaccurate.

Anyone here know of an accurate database? Most of these databases say they've been updated in the last month but I seriously doubt they know WTF they're doing.

Can't say how accurate they are, never tried to do what you're doing.

Thanks, it looks like they're quite accurate, unfortunately they limit you to 5000 requests a day and 150 000 a month / 2 second delay between requests.

For a website being hit by 100 concurrent users, implementing a 2 second delay between requests is quite hard and dare I say, if the user has to wait 200 seconds for their request to come through, by then they might be off my site already. So not much use.

Thanks though, they do seem accurate enough. will see what my options are

Oe, maybe I can leverage off of their free service and just screenscrape the data, bypassing the need for the API and it's restrictions
