Hey team,

A mate of mine with his own IT business has offered me his iPAD 1, 16GB version, still boxed for around 3.5k and since I know next to nothing about ipads I'd like to know what the going rate is for these vs. the ipad2

Anything I should look out for or check? I'll admit I haven't had ample time to google for specs comparisons vs similarly priced laptops yet.

I forgot to add that it's the Wifi+3G version (which retails for R4,299.00)

Rather wait for iPad 2 prices to drop and if you have been living without an iPad all this time I'm sure you can carry on living without an iPad.

3.5k for an OLD product is expensive in my opinion.

think of the reason why your friend is getting rid of it.

Wifi+3G version

suppose that's not bad for the 3G version.

i find the original ipad's too heavy?

Before you part with 3.5k do some googling.

Yeah, I've been wondering about that too.

Thanks Hemps

If he takes R3k for it, buy it. If you don't need a camera then the 1st gen at that price is a good way to get into the iPad experience. It also makes a great hand-me-down if you decide to upgrade in the future. I got the SO a 1st gen at the IC sale which she is more than happy with while we wait and see what's in store for iPad 3.

Voicy, the iPad 2 has much more features, its lighter and faster. If you have an iPhone, you can just get the normal iPad 2 wifi version and then use your iphone hotspot to connect to the internet. I would much rater go for the iPad 2 - because R3500 is a bit steep for an old iPad.

Thanks Nicci,

I do indeed have an iphone (3G 8GB version) - Didn't know I could do the hotspot thing with it. Thanks!

In all honesty, I wasn't in the market for the ipad, but I was curious about its going rates...seeing as I've been delaying buying a laptop for almost 2 years now. I'm not driven by necessity just yet.

Well the ipad will never be a laptop replacement, so if you need a new laptop rather not get the ipad right now, unless you can afford both of course.

Also if you dont plan on using graphic intensive apps like games in the future or the camera on the ipad 2(which is terrible) then there really isnt much difference between the versions.

I just pd R3000.00 for an ipad1 16gb 3g(2 months old). I love it, great gadget. No need for a camera, so was a great buy.

I have the iPad 1 16GB wi-fi model. I upgraded that to iOS 5 last night and it works great. I colleague of mine has the iPad 2 and I've worked with both. There is nothing the iPad 2 has that makes it worth waiting for or paying more for (compared to the iPad 1). My next upgrade - if I stick with iOS - will be the iPad 3. If I was you Voicy I would buy this iPad 1, even for R3500 if it is truly brand spanking new. You're going to battle to find any new iPad right now.
