Should an ipad2 automatically charge when connected to a laptop? Mine says "not charging".

That I have not noticed. I switched to an old ipod cable because the smaller dock connector is a pain with the case on my iPad.Yes since USB only supplies 1A at 5V, it will charge, but slower.
I also noticed my iPad charges much slower with an iPod cable than with the iPad cable (plugged into an iPad wall charger). That means there's a difference between cables too!

Synaesthesia, are you sure you are not confusing it because of the chargers? The iPhone charger has 1A output wheres the iPad2 charger has 2.1A output

There has already been a thread about the iPad 2 not charging. The reason why the iPad 2 is not charging is because of the USB port does not give enough power. U must download the app in the above thread - it runs in the background and works like a bomb!
