Not sure where to post this (there may be too many iPad fanboys in this section :D )

I am strongly considering getting the iPad 2, but some people have been lambasting it for its lack of flash support and no expansion options like a SD card. Also that its primarily a toy and not a work machine, i.e. I wont be able to edit/create powerpoint, excel, word docs, etc

I found this comparison between theMotorola Xoom vs Galaxy Tab 10.1 vsvs HP Touchpad vs BB Playbook http://dandroidtabletpc.com/specs-c...-tab-101-ipad-2-hp-touchpad-bb-playbook.html/.

Does anyone know if the other options are any better wrt "Work" functionality?
What makes the iPad better compared to these devices?
.

I haven't noticed the lack of flash support. But it's only been a few days.

You can create word, excel etc files. Pages, Numbers and Keynote are the apps and run at $9.99 each. There are others but I cannot make any recommendations. The device has to earn its keep. I have seen quite a few people take them into meetings. Some take them out, and some even tap away at them. I can't see that being particularly useful. If you are taking minutes then use a laptop.

I interview people as part of my job and I find that having a laptop open creates a barrier. I am hoping that the iPad will actually allow me to capture data without being obtrusive. We'll see. I also think that I am going to need the bluetooth keyboard.

For something to do on an aircraft - there is nothing like it.

the on screen keyboard kicks ass once you get used to it. although being unobtrusive with an iPad 2 a week after launch is not gonna happen. :D

Yes, I test drove it over the weekend; and was really impressed all round (form factor, speed, responsiveness, user friendliness, apps! OMG,) - the only thing I didnt get to test was office type functionality

Like Steve says "..competitors are still catching up to iPad 1.." :) iPad2 FTW in my opinion..

That's also why i think competitors are catching up to Apple and it's iPad. Competitors are trying to treat a tablet pc as a laptop replacement but Apple has taken the approach that the tablet is meant to fill the void between mobile phone and laptop and their pricing reflects this. So Apple has once again succeeded where others have failed. lol

IMO the Xoom is way better than the IPad 2, for a number of reasons, such as flash card support, USB, etc, etc. BTW, nobody seems to have mentioned that the Xoom charges in a third of the time as an IPod2, a major advantage if you are on the road.

However, for me the most important reason is the fact that it uses Android, and that it does not require iTunes - the latter is a killer, as far as I am concerned.

I am dumping all my Apple stuff, and now also have a Sony XPeria ARC, must be one of the best phones on the market.

Note : Not sure what the harping about competitor prices is all about, I paid R5300 for a 32GB wifi Xoom, including taxes and shipping.

I got the 16gb model. Using home sharing I can effectively access and stream any track from my 25000 strong iTunes library and video stream ($2.99 at app store) allows me streaming access to over 3tb of video files off my desktop...

16gb is too much!!

Well I am inclined to agree but that is also why I have not got one of these tablet things. I just don't see a point to one. All these tablet's out there are just larger version's of smart phones and just don't see a point to getting one right now. Perhaps in the future but not now. I am not a storage junky as I have 16 gb on my iPhone 4 and that is more than enough and I would never watch movies or series on my tablet pc so why would I need so much space on a tablet pc? So flash storage is not a consideration for me and what is the point to USB?? I have also not noticed the missing flash support on m iPhone 4 so couldn't care less about that either. Once you jailbreak the iPad, it does everything the Android tablets do and iTunes is not a killer. I enjoy having one central location that takes care of everything and I don't need separate programs to do separate tasks.

So it all comes down to personal taste and I would rather get an iPad than a Motorola but that's just me.

Why wouldn't you? I've got an 11hr flight coming up and I just know I'm going to be stuck in that one seat where the entertainment system is having a BSOD episode. Plus I regularly use my iPad at home when the missus/kids have somehow wrangled control of the remote and are subjecting me to cartoon network or, even worse, Greys anatomy.

I find iTunes to be a blessing, not a curse. Having one central media/content/application/backup management system makes life so simple.

I have never had a problem with in flight entertainment personally. But besides that, I don't fly regularly enough to justify that as a reason, I don't have kids and when I have flown, I usually sleep quite easily in flights and have my MacBook without problems. As i said, comes down to the individual.

Just like in the old IBM mainframe days, zero flexibility? For me it's a killer, I am busy giving all my Apple stuff away to deserving relatives - no straitjacket for me! But I am not sure that I am doing them a favour!

As for the USB, the benefits are too numerous to mention - for starters I can back my camera photos up on my tablet, directly, without a PC - quite useful when on a trip.

Oh, and taking a few 32GB microSDHC flash cards with me for extra storage is no hassle, they are cheap now (last one was USD70, but I am sure that you can get them for less).

You appear to be the Android equivalent of an Apple fanboy.

+1!!! I've never understood the animosity towards it!! Like all apps it has its nuances but generally I've found it a pleasure to use!! Home sharing is fantastic and works brilliantly...

It handles my 25000, 292gb strong music library with aplomb :)

Using an adapter you can easily back up photos from an SD card onto the iPad 1 or 2. Its also a great way to quickly show off your photos. You cant however use the SD card as additional storage.

This has been my experience as well. I have never found a reason to dislike iTunes to the extent most people carry on.

I have never had a problem with in flight entertainment personally.

Last time I went to the USA, I ended up on an ancient Air France Jumbo from Paris to San Francisco without an entertainment system (the plane was too old) - I almost went insane - not only will I not fly Air France again, but I will also make sure that I have a tablet with entertainment with me.

Actually you can, but it's a bit of a kluge. :)

As for photos I have a eye-fi card that streams images onto my iPad as I'm taking them. :)
