Thats not really an answer now is it, some of us like listening to music (that I have legally bought from the store) on other devices.

I listen to my music that I have bought in the car too. I just don't use those flash drives.
But your setup sounds quite complicated, and iOS is probably a bad solution for you

Superior screen size and aspect ratio, better touch screen responsiveness, higher build quality, superior app selection versus android's file management strengths.

For me that's what it comes down to. With the right apps you can browse your pc's folders so much of the file management annoyances can be worked around.

The 2013 Nexus 7 is awesome - VERY similar screen quality as the iPad Mini Retina. Oh, and it is 16:9 ratio, tiny letterbox videos
My wife owns a Nexus 7 2013 and I the Retina Ipad Mini - both have their pluses and minuses.

As mentioned above, I own a Retina Ipad Mini - and my wife a Android
I believe the devices have their different benefits and from form factor point of view the mini "just feels right" as a reader and for games, apps - thats for me though..... My wife loves the Android device and is familiar to her also for watching movies etc.
Essentially we use them as readers.

But WOW - the A7 64 bit processor on the iPad is awesome! - REALLY responsive.
PS, still like my Android phones though

You can't sync it like that. It doesn't have a file system in the traditional sense (Which is confusing at first if you are used to old school computing platforms like I was), but each app can load their own files in whatever way they deem fit. So for example, many apps use the iCloud document storage, other apps like VLC can load from shares, etc. It is up to each app developer and the experience they want to deliver

Yeh, but with each app you have to open it up to get it to sync... its a hassle (if the application even supports it). If I have network shares for my tablet e.g.

I don't want to open five different apps manually each time I want to sync the latest version of what's in those shares. Its backwards.

This is probably my biggest issue with my iPad.

You seem to have quite a specialised usage. I almost never sync anything to my iPad. I have done that maybe once or twice in the last two years. But when I did, it was very easy

With syncing I mainly just use iTunes directly to get content on and off the device. It's a bit wonky but at least you can have an unlimited amount of content on the PC side and sift through it all fairly easily. Getting stuff on and off an Android device and managing it all in large volumes from the PC side can be a headache.

I've been singing the praises of Play Books cloud upload. You drag-drop PDFs/Epubs into the browser and it syncs the books and even the bookmarks across devices. Works for Android and iOS.

so - I have a ipad 3, why wife wants a 10" iPad - I want something smaller. What are the opinions on the iPad Mini Retina vs the Nexus 7 (2013).

Initially, I had three Galaxy tabs, and they all went back within two weeks because of quality issues, I don't want to go through the same with the Nexus 7, although I would prefer an Andoid device, I don't like being locked down like I am with my iPad.

Why dont you sync your iPad with the Pc and download the songs to Flash Drive?
Works for me.

Isn't all iTunes stuff now DRM free? Can't you check and re-download? And if that fails, you can burn to audio CD and re-rip.

Couldn't it be because they're not MP3 files? iTunes music is M4A. You can convert it over.

Yeah it's long dead. Kind of a shame because it was rather good; but I guess it wasn't a shopfront so it just couldn't survive . I'd rather use a cloud-based system anyway these days.

If you have an app like goodreader you can just import them via wifi or USB and quickly transfer them to iBooks.

I wonder if they'll ever update iOS to support background syncing for applications, that would solve all my problems.

I try and automate everything I do which is repetitive, which in the end saves me a ton of time.
