Hi

Last Sunday I visited my sister in law. She has an ipad (and two daughters).

Feeling unusually generous and armed with my credit card I decided to buy the angry birds app for the girls.

Surprise Surprise! I may not / cannot buy angry birds from iTunes from South Africa.

I think buying an Apple product in SA is like buying a boerewors roll with a vienna sausage in it.

You can buy the outer hardware but the lekker inside bits Apple will only sell to anybody except us South Africans.

I will not buy another Apple product until Apple iTunes starts to treat us South Africans with some respect.

Yes I know there are 'work arounds'. But basically I must purger myself and commit fraud in order to make them work and get the full benefit of my ipod/ipad/iphone.
The full benefit I deserve.

It's not iTunes. It's the SA ratings board that will not allow apps to be sold without a parental guidance age restriction, which they charge stupid money for on a per app basis.

No need to commit fraud. Ons moet daardie hele 'mindset' laat vaar ou broer.
Jailbreak the thing and start using it properly already.

I've read that before. Now not being funny, but does anyone know how Androids Play store gets round this???

By now you should know the three Apple buzzwords ... 'Can't ... 'workaround' ... 'Jailbreak'

For most tasks you'll be confronted with the option

I would guess they have an arrangement in place with the FPB:

Thanks for the link. Explains things nicely.

Also makes me glad that as a previous iphone, ipad, ipod classic, ipod touch and ipod shuffle owner, I'll never buy another Apple product.

No idea and I doubt that's the reason. If it's really the reason then the FPB must be gotten rid off (legally).

The fewer laws, the better.

I gather iTunes could completely IGNORE SA law. Apple has no presence in SA and other sites which do sell to everyone else - have no such qualms. Look up GOG.COM. They sell to SA. Some of those games have never been released in SA. Gamersgate, also has some games - which have probably never been released. NIS USA, Play-Asia, etc. TakeALot and WantItAll import stuff from Amazon US / UK and unrated stuff.

BTW the Entertainment category is available to SA. Not sure how that is FPB exempt. LOL.

If this is FPB's fault, take it up with them. This government directive needs to be abolished, after all the government is supposed to work for us, because we pay for its running with our tax. This isn't Luis XIV's France.

When you jailbreak it you can install "backup" and pirate versions? How's THAT no committing fraud?

Is there a huge marketplace for games on the various unofficial iPad/phone repositories?

Well to be honest, its Apple's Fault not FPB.

Yes the law exist, but their are ways to sell it legally and nothing stops Apple from using those avenues so I would continue to blame Apple.

See Android, Windows Phone, Nokia and BB app stores <-- All mobile, all available to South Africans.

Piracy is copyright infringement = Civil case ie: Apple can take you to court and you pay a fine if found guilty
Lying about information in a legal tender = criminal case and the government can send you to jail if found guilty.

Huge difference, not that our government have time to go after people using false data just that they legally can if they so wish.

Google installious or see hackulo.us

SA definition of fraud: It is the unlawful and intentional making of a misrepresentation which causes actual prejudice or which is potentially prejudicial to another.

It's more the cover up such as deleting forum posts while continuing to sell all Apple products at full tilt that piszes me off.

How many times do we hear and read about the app store being the big selling point for Apple, but really, in SA it's a lie unless you want to break the law?

Nah, this organisation leaves such a nasty taste that it doesn't matter to me how good their products are, I'll have nothing to do with them ever again.

Just because you could do some dubious things with your ipad once it is jailbroken it does not automagically mean you are guilty of eg. fraud/copyright infringement/whatnot.

I have no up to date info on whats available on the unofficial repositories. Last I saw the marketplace(s) are quite extensive.

What are you people going on about? You don't need to JB. Just set up a US account and pay with vouchers. or a Kenyan account and pay with your SA credit card. Be sure to use a real US or Kenyan physical address, don't use an email address ending on .za and you'll be gaming in minutes. Switching between your accounts in iTunes is easy. Do a search for "kenya" on this forum and you will get all the gory details.

Yes, it's ridiculous that we have to resort to such tricks. I personally am not a gamer, so I don't need this. But it's a well-travelled route.

Agreed. If Apple gave a solitary damn about this market that FPB problem would be negotiated away. We might not get all quarter million (or whatever) games, but we could at least get the known big sellers.

I hardly think providing a fake address on an iTunes account would lead to a South African prosecutor prosecuting you. Maybe a US prosecutor, but not a South African one.

There is no reason for this law to exist though. It should be scrapped.
