iPad Pro or Macbook?

Honestly, the best value machine in Apples Macbook range right now is the 14 Pro.

Probably the best machine I have ever used. Actually quite a versatile machine coming from a Linux desktop & using VM's to esign docs....it is absolute bliss.

Also, the battery life is absolutely UNHOLY.

What planet are you living on?

The only time it’s the best value is if you aren’t paying for it yourself.

The Air is by far the best bang for buck now and gets the vast majority of people 85% there and the new one has all the real benefits of the 14-inch Pro as well.

The 14-inch Pro, in fact the entire Pro line up is really just a necessity machine for those who absolutely need it, there isn’t real “value” to he had unless you are comparing it to the rest of the non-Apple market then the statement makes more sense.

Have both and find the iPad pro a bit irritating to use
Editing text is the biggest drawback
The on screen keyboard seems to encourage me to make mistakes
Have the 12.9" version and the battery life is poor. Right from day one, it would fade away at 5.00pm and Digicape from where I bought it were not interested

I am comparing it to everything non-Apple.

I bought the machine out of “necessity” and because i had some disposable income and it suits my workflow very well - which surprised me in fact.

The Air, albeit good value, the lack of screen support irked me quite a bit, which Pro meets.

The additional hardware for video encoding and rendering is something im grateful for as my partner is able to take advantage of it quite well.

So for web dev, other coding interests, video & photo editing and other uses it has practically replaced my desktop completely. I do keep the desktop around for when im in the mood to play a game or something

Aah yes in a non-Apple context it makes a lot more sense as a value proposition in the market.

What do you mean by screen support? And are you referring to the old M1 Air or the new M2 version?

They are probably referring to the amount of external screens they support, M1 and M2 both only support 1.

Aaah yes of course.

Don’t recall when last I even used one external, never mind needing two.

The old M1 & M2 chips only support 1 external display.

I dont need 2 external displays, but my partner does for some weird reason

100% this!

The best value is the Air.

The Macbook Pro isn't 'value orientated' - but far from it. You're wasting your money unless you need the specific dedicated hardware media processing engines the M1 Pro and Max offer over the base M1 / M2. The extra horsepower of the M1 Pro / Max offer is there to serve video editors and music producers specifically.

I get the feeling that your rather niche needs might not extend as far as the OP's needs. I do a lot of photo and video editing and even my needs are well served by the M1 Air.

I got the iPad deal from FNB and it’s such a great wee machine for my needs that now I’m wondering if I actually do need a new MacBook. I think my needs have changed since I don’t work away so often and also having moved house I now have a good fibre connection so streaming has replaced the need for USB ports. So I reckon this will do for the foreseeable and I’ll just hold back and keep collecting the eBucks and see what 40% bargains come around over the next few months :)

I do tend to be very unnecessary with hardware. But i dont like buying hardware often. So I over buy all of the time

My last MBP lasted about 8 years. I didn't buy my M1 Air expecting any less.

My 2011 MPB died in 2020 from a swollen battery. That's a good 9 years. Had I not destroyed the tri-wing screws and battery mountings with attempting a dodgy homemade repair (without a tri-wing screwdriver), it would probably still be alive today with a proper battery replacement.

I've since had the 2017 MBP, 2020 M1 and now the 2021 M1 Max - thats not due to the laptops needing to be replaced, but just due to my obsessive compulsive upgrade disorder. :X3:

The superb design and build quality of Macbook's in general, far outlive their functional design life.

I broke my 2013 MBP over lockdown trying to replace the battery, otherwise I'd still be using it today.

Thankfully they seem to have simplified that process in later models.

My kid's new iPad arrived along with a FNB sim card? What's the point of that?

We all wondered, but it does appear to get free minutes and some data every month so I'm planning to put it in my kid's phone that has no SIM whatsoever.

I suspect it’s an internal process deficiency where they can only tie a contract to a SIM card.

An eSim would be useful - does FNB offer those?
