iPad WHY are People Buying this useless thing?

I think it has something to do with this:

they say Chuck Norris took a bite of that apple

AirVideo is great, but lately i find i've been using StreamToMe more often, it's more configurable.
It doesn't look like a necessary app for me on the iPad but I did download the free mac version all the same. :D

StreamtoMe is great and what I've been using thus far. What's nice about home sharing is it replaces your iPod UI, the cover icons in Album view show and even Cover Flow works. Really just makes it seem like my 8gb iPod went to a 200gb iPod. Only irritation is you have to get it in "more", you can't have a little icon for it at the bottom in iPod.app, oh and I can't invoke a genius playlist, but that's it.

Ok, I don't use my iPad for audio so I guess that's why I'm not particularly interested in choosing this over Air Video.

All the streaming audio stuff will be built into the iOS update on Friday presumably?

Does that mean i can stream from PC to Ipad.
Only have the Ipad for a few weeks, so still got some research to do.

yes. for apps like Air Video and Stream to Me you need to install a small server app on the PC.

Resource wise how do the two compare (Airvideo and Stream to me)? I use an old pentium celeron as a server computer at home and find that it can't stream with Airvideo because the 384mb of RAM just isn't enough. Don't want to bring my laptop home every night just for this.

I'd imagine they require similar resources. Try buzzplayer instead, plays just about any format very smoothly on the device itself, without having to transcode. Also has a built in network browser and can play video over wifi.

Thanks. I gave Buzzplayer classic a shot, the sound works but the video is not displaying. Just a green screen though you can see it is trying to convert or something.

I also downloaded xbmc today from their own repo just to see what it can do, but unfortunately something is wrong cause the app doesn't open at all (I have an iphone 3G).

What format were you trying to play? Never had a problem with buzz so I'd be interested to know. Could be the 3G is a bit slow for the software playback.

I am glad this thread has migrated towards favouring the iPad

Avi files. Also think it is the 3G that is too slow. :(
