iPad WHY are People Buying this useless thing?

im just an iphone user, always used a windows based pc but do find the iphone amazing wrt reading ibooks on the go, take the phone out and read anywhere, even the loo. Also, apps are gr8, web browzer excellent and games decent as well. angry birds is a hit and plays nicer with the touch screen than my pspgo version.

why an ipad...im itching to buy one but the ipad 2 announcement has made things complicated! why spend now when in a month or 2 hopefully a slimmer, updated, faster version is available at similar prices (thought core officially dropped the ipad 1 prices today)...why an ipad again - mags, books, web browsing, games and many more on the go! cant wait to experience an ipad!

it's the gadget thing and i'm a huge gadget girl. but i've also thought before buying cause i can get a mini laptop with great specs for that price. the galaxy tab would be easier to carry but for the same price one might go for the size although the tab has a camera i believe. i personally want a cintiq http://www.wacom.com/cintiq/.

If I didn't have an iPad and was planning on buying now, I would wait for the 2 - hopefully this one will get to SA faster than the first version.

Now I would like to know why do people fork out so much money for something that doesnt have USB port, HDMI connection, very far from being mini PC of some sort(GIANT iphone yes).
WHY?

I cannot speak for all segments, but it is quite useful for frequent business travelers. On many business trips they don't actually need to work on documents. They need to be able to pull them up for reference.

They want to stay in touch with emails, but don't what to have to type replies on a smartphone.

And the option to watch movies, etc while sitting in the hotel room is appealing.

So instead of toting around a laptop, it provides a lightweight alternative.

Here is why i have an Ipad.
How many of you take photos and videos (using a proper camera and video cam) or have magazines and comics stacked up.
Well, having it on the PS3 or PC is so bleh - who finds the time to look at it.
In come the Ipad - just the right size, so easy to use, to carry... not small like a phone...
You can sit on yr bed and browse, better than lugging around a laptop that burns you physically (and a baby that uses the keyboard as a battering ram).
Andbrowsing is just so easy, reading magazines, comics (which are cheaper btw), news - apple IOS is so smooth.
It is also instant ON, no booting up a PC - i never realised how nice this is until i had one.
Plus there are so many applications...
HDMI out - what do i need that for - if i wanted to output a video or something, y would i use an Ipad.
Remember Ipad is inbetween a phone and Laptop, not a replacement for either of them. It fills in the gap for the cons of those devices.
Lastly, the LED screen is beautiful - yes not e.ink, but far better than a LCD.

P.S. Not an apple fanboi, no Iphone, no Mac, basically no other apple product - just went for the Ipad cos of practicality (no other decent tablets out there).

The iPad is nothing but an extension to one's technological needs and desires. It doesn't replace any computer and this is what people keep expecting when buying it. It is very convenient in some circumstances where lugging around a notebook is just unnecessary and where your smart phone is just to small. Fills a nice gap.

After ages of indecisiveness I've decided I'm getting one. Mate of mine from London is getting married here in April - getting him to bring me an Ipad 2.

I reckon it's perfect device for the average home user who just need to check their email and surf the web. The only trouble is, you need a computer to get it up and running!

Actually forgot abt that. Mail is instant on the device - as compared to opening IE, ... on the Ipad i have 3 accounts and opening and syncing is instant. (Yeah, a phone can do this, maybe not as quick, but my Nokia 5800, whether using gmail or work emails, only syncs for a week after i inserted my settings - i am becoming more and more against nokia - poor software and no apps).
True though, u need a computer, a bit silly i agree, but i think apple are sending a message that its not a PC.

Dude - it's all about the apps man. If the quality of apps (touchscreen and mobile optimised UI's) were available as easily on other platforms (and they will be one day) then the iPad wouldn't be as hot as it is. Med students have all their textbooks coming with digital downloads of the ENTIRE text - that's more useful than carrying around a whole trunk of tomes surely!

superskully, what app do u use for comic reading?

Dont laugh, archie comics - think there is only one app, same as US store, same books as well.
Plus side is that i paid R600 for 40 comics which are R30-R50 each for paperback in SA.
So i saved a lot of money (though the wife does not beleive it).

As an apple fanboy... the ipad is useless to me as well, but I have different needs.

Exactly, if you cannot see the need for it.
Exact reason why i dont buy a Mac, >12k for a PC when an HP worth 6k will suit me.
Also why i dont have an iphone, cos y should i pay 7k just to make calls and write sms'es and use GPS ocasionally (although i am very interested in a Golf GPS application that costs R300 whereas similar non-phone devices cost 4k).

i look forward too, to using the ipad to read comics. I feel the official marvel comic book app for iphone / ipad to be too expensive as they want 2 to 3 dollars per comic. I am looking forward to the ipad to view comics via the web browser on the ipad as it costs about 50 to 60 dollars for an annual subscription to marvel digital which includes a huge catalogue of comics. im hoping this works on the ipad! they have some complete series, nice classics and some new comics and digital exclusives as well.

i hope that the extra viewing space on the ipad (compared to pspgo and iphone) and the fact that its lightweigt and easy to carry around, makes comic viewing a pleasure.

Is there anyone with insight as to how comics view on the ipad?

Its quite amazing - remember that the ipad is like the size of a A4 book.
The rich colour, the movement and also u can zoom in and out with your fingers.

Saying that - yesterday i bought and downloaded a golf digest magzine at R35 and 0.5 gb. Quite expensive when i can get a subscription at 60% discount through discovery.
But, i have discovered the magazine is interactive with 3D views, videos.... well worth it.

My only regret now is getting a 16GB model.

With the new iTunes Home sharing you should be fine, 16gb is plenty for me.
