iPad WHY are People Buying this useless thing?

I am a computer engineer. I've built my own PCs, I've built lower level stuff, I've broken (and sometimes fixed) stuff. I had a Nokia phone for which I wrote J2ME apps, and I had a HTC Winmo phone on which I ran XDA-developers type firmware. I currently have a BlackBerry because I love the battery life and the fact that I can connect on GTalk and leave it running all day (without it timing out or disconnecting from the server).

That said - I love my iPad. As somebody who is concerned about the inside and the detailed working of all my electronics, having something so simple, straight-forward and versatile around, is quite awesome. It starts up quicker than my custom built PC, it runs longer than my high-end laptop (and starts up quicker). I use it to keep notes in meetings, read programming books while coding (so I don't need to buy the expensive, physical printed books), play a quick game in bed, demo websites to a client sitting in a coffee-shop. It complements almost every electronic device I own in my house!

Furthermore - you have the BIGGEST development community behind Apple's products - which also implies the most innovation (when it comes down to app developers). My blackberry (while awesome) will only occasionally get a new, innovative app before an Apple does.

I will miss the way BlackBerry handles notifications and basic communication too much - that's why I won't get an iPhone any time soon (Apple's notifications are quite frankly, crap). But an iPad, as a complement to my existing devices? That makes sense to me.

iPad 2? No, I'll skip this one (incremental upgrade rather than great new innovation).

I don't need the latest Apple product. I enjoy something that increases my productivity yet simplifies my life. The fact that I own an 'Apple' product is just a 'social bonus' for me!

Edited Disclaimer: I own an iPad, BlackBerry, Kindle, Nokia phone, Windows Mobile phone. Read Engadget often, as well as BoyGeniusReport and MyBroadband. Gadget freak, but I am yet to get an Android device. So yes, I may be biased.

Considering the cost of those devices, I thought it would have been included... don't you get a strand of Bill Gates' hair with Windows 7 Ultimate, or is it Vaseline?. :D

This troll thread is LOL. It is so predictable. Whenever there is an Apple event with a new product launch, the trolls (that usually have never owned any Apple equipment) come on here and try to get a reaction. The problem for them is that most of us have become accustomed to this and don't rise to the bait :D

I'm in the market for an old iPad 1. Anyone selling? I believe new it's down to $399.

Or swap for a iPhone 3G.

If you don't like something, Windows, OSX, Mac, PC, whatever, don't buy it and shut up. I don't care if you don't know why someone buys something. It's your opinion. I don't want to know. Give us facts and we'll talk. Until then, go away.

nice post.
i think the other thing which people don't really get full advantage of in za is the full apple ecosystem - the full range of books, movies, apps and music, all downloadable via usa-speed wlan bandwidth on tap.
